Last week we read in the papers
that intoxicated cows led the officers
to a still somewhere or other. Mon
day we read where intoxicated hogs
led to the discovery of another still
somewrhere else. Perhaps it may
be wise to add a few hogs and cows
to the detective force throughout the
- country.
The "Carolinian" is the name of
Cliff Langford's paper at St. Matthews.
Mr. Langford up to a few
- ? ? All 3 _ 1 ^
weeks ago puonsnea tne Aiienaaie
County Citizen, a very bright and
newsy paper, but he failed to receive
the support needed for the paper he
wanted to give Allendale, so he went
r*
to St. Matthews, taking over the Calhoun
Advance. The Carolinian is a
creditable production, and no doubt
will be handsomely supported by the
people of Calhoun county.
The Aiken Journal and Review
chronicled last week the twelfth
^'murder" in Aiken county to come
before the next term of court. We
thought that only a jury was qualified
to pronounce a killing a "murder."
However, whether it be- murder
or just plain killing, twelve homicides
in one county in South Carolina
between sessions of court is
something appalling. What is wrong
with our people that wholesale
slaughter is the order of the day?
. There is not another country on the
face of the globe that can match
America in the matter of killing people
in times of peace, and there is
hardly a state in the union that
K *
equals South Carolina.
Major Griffitts stated the other day
in Bamberg that this town is to be
made a model for other sections in
the matter of malaria control, and
said that it was a matter of certainty-,
ty that malaria can and will be elim
inted in Bamberg if the continued
P
coopertion of the people is given the
malaria workers. Dr. Griffitts sugo
gested that a campaign to get rid of
the malaria that is already in the
systems of the people would be a
good thing. Many folks, we learn,
have been under the impression,
through lack of information on the
subject, that with the completion of
the malaria work here, they wrould
never more be afflicted with the disease.
In this they are wrong, and as
Dr. Griffitts and all other physicians
state, those persons who have malaria
germs in their bodies will conp,
? tinue to be plagued with the disease
v until all of these germs are eliminated.
He further states that it is a
common
practice for malaria patients
to take malaria treatment when they
have chills and fever and immediately
the chills and fever leave them,
I
they stop their medicine. This means
that only a sufficient quantity of the
germs have been expelled from the
bo^y to cause a cessation of fever.
The remaining germs get right to
*
work again, and in due time will reproduce
sufficient germs to again grip
the patient in more chills and fever.
Dr. Griffitts suggested that the fever
patients continue their treatment for
several weeks after each attack, and
they will thereby rid themselves of
all germs.

Court of Inquiry Finishes Probe.
Graham, N. C., Aug. 3.?The court
of inquiry appointed by Governor T.
| W. Bickett to investigate the reportjj
ed gun battle between the Durham
machine gun company, guarding
three negroes held in the Alamance
county jail here against mob violence
jj on the night of July 10, and a masked
mob, in which James Ray, a Graham
citizen, lost his life, and two other
men were wounded, brought its official
hearing to a close this afternoon
at 4:10 o'clock without rendering a
\ verdict in specific charges filed by
Alamance citizens that the machine
gunners had fired their shots without
provocation.
Immediately following the conclu
sion of evidence, tne commissioners,
A. H. Boyden, of Salisbury; General
I B. S. Rovster, of Oxford, and Judge
\ H. W .Whedbee, of Greenville, held a
J
consultation in tlie grand jury room.
A? they left the room Colonel Hoyden
informed newspaper men that no verdict
will he rendered until the 30,000
or more words of evidence have been
submitted in typewritten form and
redigested. The commission will meet
probably within a week in Raleigh, to
draft their report to Governor Bickett.
Charges that the militiamen had
fired on citizens without provocation
preferred by 66 Alamance county citizens
in a sworn statement which was
filed in the evidence, were contradict
ed by Captain Jim Smith and other
witnesses, who said that the first shot
was not fired from an army automatic
pistol. Charges that the machine
gunners wer? intoxicated on the night
of the shooting and that they acted
in an unbecoming manner were decided
by testimony of Attorney E. S.
Parker, McBride Holt, manufacturer
and banker and other citizens, who
said the soldiers throughout their
stay in Graham acted as gentlemen
I of high calibre. C. A. Shue was the
only witness who testified to the contrary.
He said that he saw several
| of the soldiers on the jail porch singi
ing boisterously, patting their feet
occasionally shouting.
From start to finish during today's
hearing witnesses declared that no

on the night of the shooting, and that
there was absolutely no sign of a mob
around the jail, although several of
them admitted that the attitude of the
crowd surrounding the jail on Sunday
July 18, was threatening.
