DR. HAIR IX MAINE.
They Sell 25-Pound Watermelons for
$2.00 Each in Boston.
Portland, Me., July 16.?Dear
Herald: I want to drop a few lines
to you and the folks at home, as the
more I see of other parts of our great
country the more I love old South
Carolina, and especially old Bamberg
county.
We had a lovely trip on the Ocean
steamship line from Savannah to
Boston, and after spending two as
hot days as I have spent this summer,
Mrs. Hair and I came on up to
Portland, Maine, and are now
sleeping under two blankets. Say,
what do you think of that in these
July days?
I am not able to buy much of our
southern produce, as I priced a
watermelon in Boston and they
?a'; ;
wanted $2.00 for a 25 pound size.
This was a retail store. When I was m
\ touring Boston in a rubber-neck car
I saw watermelons cut so thin in
slices it looked as if the melon went
fir #
through a corn shredder and the
small Italians were eating it red meat ,
and all. I was told, and it looked
to be true, that on these Italian
streets there is a child for each pebble
in the street. Now, do not laugh
and shake your head, for you should
have seen the kids all looking well
and healthy and dirty.
I am sending you a folder of Portland
which I hope you will enjoy. If
I get a chance I will write more. We
go from here to Old Orchard Beach
and then on to Canada. Home when
money is gone. I am yours,
GEO. F. HAIR.

: With an avalanche of Bamberg
hits and a comedy of St. Matthews
errors at Rhoad Park Monday afternoon
the local boys romped on the
visitors from St. Matthews to the \
tune of 7 to 1. The game had been
advertised as a Barnwell-Bamberg
affair. But with its accustomed manner
of doing things, or rather not
doing things, Barnwell went to
pieces at the last minute and dis- .
appointed the local club. Consequently
the St. Matthews management
was immediately communicated
with by telephone and after some
persuasion and rather attractive inducements
agreed to come over and
relieve the situation by favoring us
vwith a game. The full St. Matthews
league team appeared with the ex;
, ception that Kitts pitched for the
visitors and George Ulmer, Elloree's
first baseman, was playing that bag.
The Bamberg team displayed
splendid ginger, playing full of snap
and pep at all times. Nearly the
whole team hit well. Turnipseed
caught a nice game, Large played a _
dandy short and made a perfect stop ~
of a skidding grounder at a critical
time and with a Springfield shot killed
a runner at the plate, while old
"Bub" Cooner in his new role as a
center fielder covered himself with
glory. The feature play for St.
Matthews was when F. Gressett came
tearing in from left field for what
seemed a sure hit by Smith and
robbed the little pitcher with a great
shoe string catch.
The game was won in the second
inning when "Gyp" Rentz led off with
a pretty single to right. Large forced
him out at second, and Watson
and Large were both safe at first and
second when F. Prickett at third
errored Pete's grounder. Schultz
then came through with a clean drive
to right center and Large scored.
Smith grounded to second and was
retired at first, each runner moving
up a bag, from where Otto and
Schultz both scored on Turnipseed's
two base hit down the right field line.
* "Bub" Uooner drove a snon, smgie lu
left; the throw to the plate to catch
Turnip was accurate, but "Stumpy"
Banks dropped the ball and the
fourth and last run of the inning
counted. In the fifth Kitts hit sharply
to third and after making a sensational
stop "Gyp" threw over first
ahd the big pitcher was safe. He did
the unusual thing for a pitcher by
trying to pilfer second and continued
unhampered on his way to third as
Turnipseed threw into center field.
C. Prickett then smashed a beautiful
double to right and Kitts in a Bamberg
uniform trotted over the rubber
with the only St. Matthews tally.
Score by innings:

St. Matthews 000 010 000?1 7 4
