YT MILL PLANT, ORA
T
PORTRAIT OP GEN. BAMBERG.
qualifications of your noble standard
bearer, Hon. Lycur - T. Pooch, ***
S which reminds me of a story. There
was once an old darky, who was being
pursued by a mountain bear. As
he was running along a rabbit got
in his path and ran along ahead of
him. Finally the old tfarky yelled
to the rabbit, 'Git out of de way,
Ivou rabbick, an' let somebdy run
what kin run.' *** Now, that's what
I say of the tariff. Aiid let us consider
Washington crossing the Delavware.
Was there an ice trust in
those days to corner all the ice in the
Delaware river and spoil Washington's
stunt? I say, was there? I
defy anybody to successfully contra
diet me, which reminds me of a sto- j
lU ry. Once there was a man whose!
Wm hair was falling out, and he went to
HIm a doctor and said, 'Doctor, my hair
Hp? is coming out. Can you tell me of a
B| good thing to keep my hair in?' The
KV doctor replied, 'Yes; a cigar box.' ***
Artist P. P. Carter Receives Much
Praise for Portrait Work.
Colonel P. P. Carterf the "Painter
' of the Confederacy," has just completed
an oil painting of the late
General Franeis M. Bamherg. When
completedrthe portrait was submitted
to many old friends and acqpaintances
of the general, all of whom
say that the painting bears a most
remarkable resemblance to this old
Confederate soldier.
| General Bamberg died several
years ago, and had never been seen
by the' artist. The portrait was
painted from an old portait and a
description of the general. The work
is praised very highly by the family.
Col. Carter left Friday for his
home in Virginia.

A favorite tampaign opcc^u. ,
We have had one favorite cam
paign speech ever since we have been
a mere child. It is the only campaign
speech we have ever heard, but we
have heard it delivered'by many of
the greatest orators our^country has
ever produced?both Democratic and
Republican. It runs about as follows,
the *** (stars) showing where space ,
is left for applause, for the orator
to take a drink of water and to change
the subjeet?three important things
in speech making:
"Ladies and Gentlemen: I have
just had a long and tiresome trip on
| the train for the purpose of coming
J here tonight and telling you of the

NGEBURG, S. C. YARD
"That brings us down to the civil j
war. Can anybody deny that that
was a great war? I require no answer.
Does not that prove that Lycurgus
T. Pooch deserves the vote of
every right thinking man in this audience?
Which reminds me of a story.
Once a little boy was late" at
school and told the teacher he was
kept at home by. sickness in the familv
'What was the matter?' asked
the teacher. 'Please, miss* it was
twins,' said the little hoy. 'But maw
sayes it aint ketchin.' ***
"As to our foreign relations, I have
only this to say, which reminds me of
another story. Once there was an
automobile driver who ran over himself.
That sounds strange, but it is
true. 'He drew up to a curb and asked
a lady if she would run across the
street and buy a package of cigarettes
for him. But the lady didn't have .
time, so he ran over himself. ***
"And now in conclusion (business
of looking at watch) I would simply
say this. Take your conscience with
you into the polling place next Tuesday, and
if you will do so you will vote
for that upright citizen,# that distin- /
guished diplomat, that astute, business
man, that resourceful executive, '
Lycurgus T. Pooch, who *** grand
old flag *** our forefathers who came
over in the Mayflower *** and then at
Bunker Hill *** the grand old constitution
of these United States ***
oh, say can you see *** the gem of
the ocean .*** shall wave from the
aurora borealis to the day of judgment
*** one and inseparable ***
now and forever *** good night."?

Traps and TraPpers.
Tourist?"My good friend, do-you
earn your living by simply trapping!
and skinning animals?" {
Trapper?"Yep. It runs in the
family. I got a brother in Philadelphia
in the same business."
Tourist?"In Philadelphia?"
Trapper?"Yes! He owns one of
them apartment houses."
Newly Defined.
A couple of Wall street men at
luncheon one day were speaking of
the optimistic temperament of a mutual
friend when the talk turned to <
the real meaning of the word "optimist."
"Weil," said one of the brokers, "I J
have figured it out this way: A pes- 3
simist says, 'Is there any milk in that
pitcher?' An optimist remarks, 'Pass
the cream, please.' "
