HOME DEMONSTRATION DEPT. |
Miss Emma Jane Yarn, Home !
Demonstration Agent.
Chicken Campaign Opens Aug 1.
It is safe to say that fully 25 to
50 per cent, of the hens which make
up the farm flock of poultry do not
lay eggs enough to pay for the feed
they consume. Many hens are kept
from three to five years on the farm
and such individuals are always at
a loss to the owner. By keeping the
best layers and culling put the poor
producers a greater profit will be derived
from the farm flock. Again
eggs will be hatched from only the
heavy layers and this will have a tendency
to increase the laying qualities
of the next generation.
By disposing of all inferior hens
during the early fall sufficient room |
is provided for this year's young
stock. This will allow them more
housing space and the health of the
flock will be increased, thus causing
a greater eSS production.
The county home demonstration
agent is planning a poultry culling
campaign as a regular part of hef
yearly work. The campaign will be
carried on from August 1 to October
"15, as it has been proven that best
results are obtained during this season.
The purpose of the campaign is to
enable the farm owner to realize a
greater profit from the poultry flock.
With the present prices of corn and
other feedstuffs it is necessary to cull
out the boor producer or boarding
hen; to save as much high priced
feed as possible; to keep the best
Pfrpr 1 avers for another season: to DrO
vide sufficient space for this year's
young stock, and thus make it possi- <
ble to receive the greatest possible
returns from the farm flock. '
It ha's only been during the past <
few years that the culling work could !
be successfully carried on. The U.
S. department of agriculture and the
different state universities through ;
the efforts of their poultry depart- '
meats have been able to make a scientific
study of poultry and it is j
through their efforts that the culling <
work has been made possible. J
The selection of the good producing
i hen is Very simple, and most anyone ]
after a few moments practice can sue- ]
cessfully perform the work. The (
time of the year the hen sheds her <
v ?
feathers, the color of the legs of the
bird, comb condition, and other sim- <
^ pie physical characteristics are considered.
The county home demonstration i
agent, Miss Emma Jane Varn, plans
to hold a culling demonstration with
each woman's club in the county. In addition
many individual demonstrations
will be given. In this manner
it is hoped to $each a majority of '
the farm flocks in the county. For r
additional information and government
literature on the subject get
into communication with the dem- {
onsration agent, Miss Emma Jane (
Varn, Ehrhardt, S. C.

Walt Mason, one of our best bea
loved poets, has been converted by j
the Salvation Army workers in Los ?
Angeles, Cal. Mason, who is a genius, <
has tramped every section of the 1
country. He has been friendly with
Jhe Salvation army for a long while, j
but recently corps No. 1, of Los An
geles, was engaged in street services
as Mason passed by and the call of
the army drum was too much for him,
and he became converted. Brigadier
Boyd, of Los Angeles, is ioud in hi3
praises for Walt Mason.
In his characteristic style. Mason
wrote the following poem about his
conversion by the Salvation army: <
''One night while walking down (
the street, my mind on pleasure bent

but my soul was not content-?I saw !

me to come, as did the mu- '
sic and the song in the place where
they sold rum. I stepped into a pool
hall and found a vacant chair, andthought
that I would rest a bit and
drive away dull care; but my mind
it still persis'ed in turning memory
sod, reminding me of the time when
1 was winning souls for God. I couldn't
hnd that rest and peace?satisfaction
would not come?when suddenly
I heard the sound of the good
old Army drum. Its voice it called
* " me closer, and I found an open-air,
and once more 1 could see myself
kneeling there in prayer. For I had
; been a soldier, and known.the Saviour's
smile, but now I was a deserter?a
sinner weak and vile. But,
in spite of my meanness, I went to
the hall that night. My intentions
they were proper?I meant to do
the right. But a deserter is a coward
?always ready with some excuse?or
perhaps a careless person, and wonders,
what's the use? But the prayers
of God's faithful people won my
hard and stony heart, and at the
front that night I made another start.
And today?praise God?I'm fighting;
Jesus took me back, and now
once more I'm traveling in the good
old Calvary track."
HEALTH MEETINGS HELD.
.Motion Pictures on Tuberculosis and
Typhoid Shown in Schools.
The meetings conducted throughout
Bamberg county during the past
week under the auspices of the department
of rural sanitation and
county health work of the South
Carolina state board of health were
very successful, dite to the hearty
cooperation of the home demonstration
agent and other prominent citizens
of the county. These meetings
were held in six centrally located
school houses and were well attended.
A short talk was made at each
meeting in which the speaker ex'

were shown, one on tuberculosis,
the other on typhoid fever.
The causes and prevention of these
two dreadful diseases were clearly
brought out in so simple a form that
any child could understand, interest
being held to the last.
We hope that the people will profit
by the lessons taught in the pictures
and improve the sanitary .condition
around their homes. Typhoid fever j
is a preventable disease and should
not exist. All houses should bb
screened, and the breeding places of
flies destroyed, for they are one of
the carriers of this disease.
The people as a whole seemed
much interested in the work and wre
hope that their enthusiasm and interest
will result in the esablislxment
of a health unit in this county in the
next Vear. The health unit consists
of a doctor called the health officer,
as many assistants as necessary and
one nurse. The health officer has
charge of the sanitary condition of
the county and at the beginning of
the school term gives a free medical
examination to every school child.
