Talk on fall gardening (stressing the importance of starting fall gardens). Close with club creed: "We believe in training the head to give us power to think, plan ana | reason: in training the heart to make us kind, sympathetic, and true; in training our hands to be helpful, skillful and useful; and in caring for our health to give us strength to enjoy life, to resist disease and to make us more efficient." Winning Letters. While at the state short course held at Winthrop college June 3-12 all club girls were asked to write letters home telling what they had learned and done. The best ones were selected up there from each county and sent to the agent to publish in the county papers. The two winning this honor from Bamberg i county were Tallie Smoak, of the Duncanville club, and Ruth Sanders, of the Olar club. "Winthrop College, June 11, 1920. . i "Dear Home Folks:?Today is our last day at this lovely place. Winthrop, where I have been for the past ten days attending the state short course. I just want to tell you some of the things I've learned, seen and done wnne up nere. we nave learnlots of new games at the gyifmasium taught by Miss Lydy. She also taught us scngs and many other interesting things. "One of lie most interesting things I want to tell you about is the trip ; to the poultry and dairy farm. We saw them making the butter which we used at he college and the huge incubators that held twenty-three hundred eggs. The chickens are beautiful. "Mrs. Dora Dee Walker gave us some very useful information about canning in the steam pressure cooker and in the open canner. This morning we had a very interesting talk on good food and good health by Misses Foriiey and Snyder. We also had lessons in stenciling and I did a, pretty chair cover. Last night we went to the movies in the auditorium and saw "Winthrop Day By Day" and afterwards to a reception given by Dr. and Mrs. Johnson. We went in swimming Monday evening and certainly did enjoy it. "You all can never imagine what a fine place Winthrop is until you have had the opportuity of seeing it as I have had and I wish every club girl . could have that privilege. I have attended every meeting and have en.. joyed every one; I am determined to do my club work "well and get the >. most out it for I realize it is quite a privilege to be a club member. "TALLIE SMOAK." "Winthrop College, June 11, 1920. "Dear Home Folks:?I am up at Winthrop at the state short course having the best time I have ever had in my life. We have learned and seen so many interesting things here. We have learned v "w to make salad dressing, how to beans, tomatoes, and all kinds of vegetables. I am going to can some when I get home. Miss Varn gave us a demonstration and showed us how to set out the tomato plants properly and prune them. "We have had so much fun at the gymnasium. Miss Lydy has taught us lots of songs, yells, and games and gave us exercises to make us strong and healthy. We are going to have field day exercises tonight at 7:30 and I know we shall have a good time. "Georgia Fogle, Mary Hayne Walker, Mildred Eaves and I had a little party in our room and invited Miss Varn and some of our friends and we did have the best time. "We have had a wonderful time up here and sure do thank Dr. Johnson for letting us have the short course at Winthrop and thank all the agents for giving us such a nice time and teaching us so much. I wish every club member could attend it. "RUTH SANDERS." Notice. The members of the home demonstration clubs of South Carolina who attended the state short course at Winthrop this year started the Johnson-Walker home demonstration loan fund. This fund provides for a scholarship worth $100.00. This scholarship is to be given bv competitive examination to a girl from the home demonstration clubs of South Carolina. At the end of her course this girl is to return this fund without interest, at the rate of $100.00 per year, which amount in turn educates another girl. It is hoped by the founders of this fund that all home demonstration club members who attend the state short course at Winthrop will provide a similar fund each year so that a new girl will be able to enter Winthrop each year on this -scholarship. Resolntions of Thanks.
