l>eep Water.
St. George. June 9.?Miss Ray I
Dukes was drowned in Edisto river;
Monday afternoon. With a conting-i
ent of Girl Scouts she was enjoying)
an outing, and several members of j
the party were wading upon a sand j
bar. Because of a bend, the water j
at that particular point flows with j
considerable force, and it seems that j
the current swept the little girl from!
the sand bar into deep water.
Efforts were made by members of,
the party, including the woman who j
accompanied them, to rescue the little j

St. George, a number of people from |
both points hastened to the scene of j
the tragedy. The body was recovered ,
some distance from the sand bar.
Every effort was put forth by physicians
and others to revive her.
The little girl was about fourteen
years of age and was the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Dukes, of St.
George. The funeral services were
conducted yesterday afternoon.

Buenos Aires, .Jan. 11.?The United
States government has bought 14,000
tons oi' Argentine sugar.
For Fanners and Preservers.
New York, June 11.?Thirty-four
million pounds of sugar will be available
for commercial canners and preservers
during the five months from
June 1 to October 31, A. W. Riley,
special assistant to Attorney General
Palmer, announced here today. Assurances
that the sugar will be provided
were given, Mr. Riley, said, by
representatives of leading refiners.
Representatives of the canning and
preserving industries told him, he
said, that both industries were in a
serious condition, due to the threatened
shortage of sugar. The refiners
promised, he added, that the supply
would be available at a reasonable
price. They expressed willingness to
fill the orders of all essential industries,
but declared the principal obstacle
was lack of transportation
facilities.
The thirty-four million pounds will
be divided equally between the canners
and preservers.
Case in Point.
"Do you think it right to profit by
the mistakes of others!" the stranger,
who yet seemed vaguely familiar,
asked earnestly.
"Why, no, certainly not!" the minister
responded.
"Well, then," the stranger suggested,
"perhaps you'd like to return
me the ten dollars I gave you for
marrying me?"
