Speaker Gillette "shut off" Congressman
Byrnes in the house, the
other day, because the man from
Aiken was pouring the hot shot into
the Republican party. Mr. Byrnes *
was addressing congress on the Republican
"extravagance" in this investigating
business?this Republican
search for something wrong in Democratic
expenditures, to be used by the
Republicans as campaign material.
His allotted time had expired. He (
asked the courtesy of a few moments (
extension. The speaker would not
permit this. Congressman Champ ,
Clark asked an extension of time in behalf
of Mr. Byrnes, but the speaker*
dismissed the matter with, "I have
already recognized the gentleman r
from South Carolina." j
Speaker Gillette was shielding his (
party associates. Mr. Byrnes was in (
the midst of bald truths, and what he
was saying was hurting. They were ]
not going to permit him to say on. $
Mr. Byrnes had spoken severely of '<
the activities of the Graham commit- j
tee. The Graham committee has just (
completed a tour of the United States, ]
also taking in the Virgin Islands,
looking for Democratic crookedness
or wastefulness; and had found neith- j
er. Closing the Sixty-Fifth Congress <
the Republicans filibustered the ap-P
propriation bills to death, forcing an>
extra session. The Republicans had!
not only in this way wasted a million I ]
dollars of the public's money, but they j <
had fastened high-salaried parasites |'
on the government. He told of one .
salary which the Graham committee 11
had increased from $300 to $1,000 a|
month. He instanced that Gen. Sam- 1

and the Republicans easily showed ,
their discomfiture and anger. There '
was not a chance in a hundred that j
they would let him proceed. But he !

charter members, Mrs. M. A. Adams.
When the evening shadows fall at
;he end of a beautiful sunset, we
tnow it is but the beginning of a gorgeous
sunrise in another land, and so,
imid the surrounding shadows that
come with the dlose of a beautiful
life, we must realize it means for the
ieparted a beginning of life in the
land of eternal day.
Therefore be it resolved:
.1. That in the death of Mrs. Adims,
our society has lost a true and
loyal member, her interest in the
church and missions was unabated,
md her influence will live on and on,

2. That the society expresses its
love and sympathy for each member
of her sorrowing family, and endeavor
to make each feel that this grief
is shared by many who loved her,
and comforted only by the hope of

press, and inscribed in the minutes
of the society, as in a measure showing
the love and esteem in which she
is held.
