Tom Dunbar, Xegro Hoy, Fifteen
Years of Age, Kills Parent.
Aiken, May 7.?Clifton Dunbar, a
negro who lived near Calvary church
in the Wards section of Aiken county,
was shot and instantly killed
Thursday afternoon by his 15 year old
son, Tom Dunbar. The man was in
the act of beating the boy's mother
when he seized a single barrelled shot'
gun and fired. The woman had already
been badly beaten by her husband
holding her down had drawn a
knife and threatened to-kill her when
the boy fired. He was arrested and
brought to Aiken but released on bail.

Blackville, May 1.?Mrs. H. A. Rich
entertained the Wednesday afternoon
book club last week. After a short
business meeting, the members-of the
club continued the study of Shakespeare.
Mrs. J. V. Matthews read a
very interesting paper, contrasting
the two characters, Othello and Iago;
then followed a general discussion
of the subject, Mrs. L. B. Free leading
in the discussion. A salad course
was served, the dining room being
beautifully decorated with pink spring
flowers.
The Thursday afternoon club was
interestingly entertained the past
week at the home of Mrs. A. H.
Ninestein, the main feature of the
afternoon being a president's contest.
The winner of the first prize was
Mrs. W. W. Malony and the consolation
prize was cut for by a number

used in the dining room, where a salad
course was served the latter part of
the .afternoon. A number of Mrs.
Ninestein's friends other than the
club members were present, among
whom were Mrs. J. V. Matthews, .Mrs.
H. A. Rich, Mrs. L. E. Still, Mrs. C. J.
Pickling and Misses Sybil Buist and
Alva Baxley.
The hostesses of the Priscilla club
on Friday last were Misses Rosa and
Bertha Rich. The club was well attended
and after an hour pleasantly
< spent in needle work, ice cream and
French pastries wrere served. The
home guests of the Misses Rich were
Mrs. Marks, of Richmond, Va., and
Miss Bella Blatfk, of Camderi.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert People, of
Estill, were visitors of Miss Sybil
Buist last Sunday.
;Mrs. S. J. Lowe, Mrs. T. L. Wragg,
Mrs. E. B. Still, Mrs. L. C. Still and
others attended the U. D. C. convention
in Aiken on last Thursday.
Mrs. B. F. Storne has returned from
a visit to Atlanta.
Miss Louise Still, of Spartanburg
is the guest of Miss Cecile Fickling.
Mrs. C- Kelly has as her guests
Mrs. E. Randall and Miss Harriet
Randall, of Minnesota.
Mrs. A. H. Ninestein and Mrs. E.
H. Weissinger are spending the weekend
in Charleston and wiP visit the
Magnolia gardens while there.

SLEEPING SICKNESS REPORTED.
Case Develops in Irmo and One at St.

Two cases of sleeping sickness were
reported to the state health office, one
being reported from Irmo and one
from St. Stephens. The patients in
both cases are reported to be negroes.
Dr. R. E. Mathis, of Irmo, reported
the case of a negro man who is suffering
from the disease, and Dr. R. S.
Bush, of St. Stephens, reported the'
case of a negro boy who is also suffering
from lethargis encephalitis. In the
case at St. Stephens it seems that one
* other member of the family has also
suffered from the same disease.
These two reports of sleeping sickness
in the state are the first that
have been reported for several
months, though several cases ^;ere reported
shortly after the influenza epidemic.
Beginner's Luck.
.The third hitch man and the
no-triper had been sent out on patrol
duty in No Man's Land with strict instructions
to get the sniper who had
been worrying the company all day.
Finally the offending Jerry was located
among the branches of a tree.
With the utmost coolness the old
timer took careful aim, fired and?
missed. The recruit, with teeth chattering,
wobbled his rifle to his shoulder,
pulled the trigger, and the sniper
fell to the ground dead.
Disgustedly the veteran of three enlistments
watched the performance.
"No wonder you got him," he
growled. "You aimed all over the
damn tree."
