FERTILIZERS
AREDEULYED
Sdt Application After Phnting
Advised by Agricultural Authority
if Plant Food is Not
j ( Received in lime to Put
* Them Under the Crop -v
\
"Southern farmers are demanding
more fertilizers than ever before; but,
unfortunately, all indicatlona are that'
mough fertilisers cannot be manufactured
and delivered in time to meet
| this demand before the crops are
Pleated/' says Director J. N. Harper
of the Soil Improvement Committee,
^ who has been traveling extensively
throughout the farming sections of the
Sooth.
"In this exigency, what is the farmt
er to do? Sit idly down and say there
|s no use trying? By no manner of
means! He should proceed with his
Wflnaretion atuT n1sT?ti?? AmM
r f * "" ? ? IT"-*' O *VUIU
persist in his efforts to get his fertilizers
until he does get them, then
apply them as a aide application to his
crops.
; "Side applications have long been
* practiced under normal conditions,
/ bow necessity demands that a large
ifantity of the plant food be applied
fit this way. The plant can feed up*
t on the fertilizers when they are put
on as a side application just as well
as when put under the crop. The
float application can be made as soon
as the fertilizers are received, even
H the cotton is up and has msde some
gtowth.
i "Under boll weevil conditions, it is
desirable, of course, where possible, to
apply the fertilizer under the cotton,
but a farmer is not taking as great a
- chance at failure with a side appUca\
don as in attempting to grow the crop
without fertilisers.
"* is not as economical to make a
hide application as to distribute the
fertilisers and prepare the land with
the* same operations as is usually
dsn# at seeding time. But tike present
demand for all farm commodities and
the prices they are bringing abend*
antly justify this comparatively small
additional expense.
"The factors influencing the short*
ace of fertilisers hare been beyond
the eontrol of the fertiliser manufao;
tutors. The main difficulty hu beea
the scarcity of ground phosphate rock,
from Which to manufacture acid phosphate,
due coldly to the protracted
strikes in the phosphate fields of Florida,
and to the railroad car shortage.
The factories hare been unable to ran
at fan capacity, not only because of
< insufficient raw materials hut because
* \ ef a lack of labor. The manufacturers
are making every effort to get sufficient
materials and labor to operate
\ their factories at the highest ponsrfhle
speed. .
"The farmers should acoept the &tnation,
proceed with his planting,
Vtfiise what fertilisers he has, it any,
jpy patting them undkr his crop, aaf
apply the vest as he reoelves them,
km* feel confident that a satisfeotssy
V woy can be made."

MORE MONEY CROPS
FOR SOUTHERN STATES
Though cotton will always remain
the Sooth's main money crop, there Is
po good reason why It should he the
emoney crop that a southern
r should raise, especially when
are so many others that pay as
meU, or bette. than cotton.
' Bsfartlng to the crop nets of the
Dotted States Department of Agricultsre
for he year lilt, It wSl be found
' that Tie gross returns on some of the
lending crops are very "attractive as
compared to cotton. The returns per
