NEWBERRY WINS CONTEST. G. A. Byrd, Jr., of College of Charleston, is Third. I Greenwood, April 16.?Joe Vigodsky, of Newberry college, won first place in the state oratorical contest held here tonight. J. C. Reid, of , Erskine college, was awarded second place and G. A. Byrd, Jr., of the College of Charleston, captured third honor. Mr. Vigodsky's subject was "For a Mess of Pottage," Mr. Reid spoke on "America's Debt to the World," while the subject of Mr. Byrd's address was "The White Ship of America." > <m* ? CYCLONE DESTROYS HOUSE. Mrs. Jim McDowell Badly Bruised During Storm. \ Johnston, April 15.?A cyclone passed over the Good Hope section about eight miles away Monday night between 12 and 1 o'clock. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Jim McDowell was completely destroyed. Mrs. McDowell was badly 'bruised, being caught between a bed and a trunk. Mr. McDowell and the little baby were unharmed. Mrs. McDowell is a sister to Mrs. Paul Witt, of Johnston. Several other buildings were torn away, but no other persons were injured. ' Mesdames Paul Witt and Joseph McClung visited the injured sister Wednesday. i>i m Wings for Mrs. Vanderbilt. Mrs. W. K. Vanderbilt tells this story on herself. She was doing canteen work in France during the recent misunderstanding in that vicinity and devoted considerable time to entertaining American soldiers in one I ' of the hostess houses. Being a capable dancer, and attractive, she was in much demand among the boys. One evening, she danced several times with a tall, tow-headed, doughboy, who showed symptoms of great loneliness and talked volubly about things hack in Michigan. "I've had a bully time," he said "and I want to keep track of you. \ * We're moving out of here tomorrow for the front. But if we get back, ? I'd like to look you up in the states. My name is Albert Brigeman, from Grand Rapids. What's yours?" "I'm Mrs. W. K. That the owner is: (Give names and addresses of individual owners, or, if a corporation, give the names and the names and addresses of stockholders owning or holding 1 per cent, or more of the total amount of stock.) That the known bondholders, mortgagees, and other security holders owning or holding 1 per cent, or more of total amount of bonds, mortgages, or other securities are: (If there are none, so state.) None. 4. That the two paragraphs next above, giving the names of the own1 ers, stockholders, and Security holders, if any, contain not only the list of stockholders and security holders i as they appear upon the books of the company but also, in cases where the stockholders or security holder appears upon the books of the company as trustee is acting, is given; also that the said two paragraphs contain . statements embracing affiant's full I knowledge and belief as to the cirI cumstances and conditions under | which stockholders who do hot apr pear upon the books of the company trustees, hold stock and securities in a capacity other than that of a bona fide owner; and this affiant has no reason to believe that any other person, association, or corporation has any interest direct or indirect in the said stock, bonds, or other securities than as so stated by him. 5.
