TAX COMMISSION WINS.
Berry and Moise Defend Act of Assessing
Body.
By the narrow margin of five votes,
the house of representatives Thursday
retained the present tax commission,
by rejecting the ways and means
committee bill providing for its substitution
wi^h a board of three tax assessors,
to be elected by the general
assembly. Ninety-seven out of the
124 members voted.
The stamp of approval given the
present personnel of the commission
was in reality a personal victory for
its chairman, A. W. Jones, for it was
at him that the fight primarily was
aimed. The proponents of the bill
unhesitatingly stated that they were
endeavoring to aoonsn me yieacui
personnel by legislative enactment.
The fight was the revival of oppossition
to the state tax commission
which has appeared on the floor of the
house for the past three years, but has
never got beyond the senate. Last
year a measure abolishing the commission
was adopted by the lower
body, but was rejected by the senate.
Anti'Smoking Bill Subject of Joke.
' The following appeared on the editorial
page of the New York Telegraph
of Sunday, January 25:
"Some South Carolina legislator
from the sticks has introduced a bill
in the general assembly of that State
forbidding smoking in the dining
rooms of hotels and in restaurants,
after meals: It is probable he lives
on a farm, and more than likely he
boards in a private family while at
Columbia.
. This is the usual type. Of course
" there are public dining rooms in
South Carolina where smoking is not
ftiinwAri at Dresent.- just as there are
such dining rooms in New York and
all other cities. And to these the nonv
smoker can resort if he so elect; he is
sure not to be annoyed by either
the presence of the smoker or the
\ aroma of the 'smoke.' But this
doesn't agree with the notions of a
chronic busy-body. He not only insists
upon the right to regulate his
own habits, but he has a call to ride
herd on the habits of other people.
"However, it doesn't bother us
piuch. We seldom go to South Carolina.
If ve did we might ask our
ft: i '".
own legislature to make reprisal by
forbidding any visitor to this island
to eat pie with a knife."
' The bill referred to was introduced
by Senator Padgett, of Colleton.

Two Killed in Fight at Country Dance
in Georgia.
ir? *
Eastman, Ga., Feb. 1.?Joe Roland
confessed today to the killing of
James and Charles Cannon at a country
dance at the home of M. L. Bailey,
? near Gresston last night, according to
\ Sheriff C. N. Mullin.
Reports having been received by
the sheriff this afternoon that feeling
against the Rolands might lead to an
attack upon the Dodge county jail
tonight to lynch Joe Roland and his
aon, Charles, both of whom are charged
with murder, caused the removal
of both prisoners to another county
for safekeeping. Sheriff Mullins
.would not state where the prisoners
AV have been taken.
According to the sheriff the elder
- Roland claimed in his confession that
the Cannon brothers, members of a
prominent Dodge county family cursed
the wife of the younger Roland.
All went into the front yard, he said,
to settle the matter. He says the
Cannon boys attacked his son and
he went to the aid of the latter and
received a knife wound in his neck,

Roland said he drew a 38 calibre
* pistol and shot and killed both men.
The sheriff said that he had information
that members of the party
had been drinking.
Charles Cannon, was a street car
conductor and the sheriff said that he
returned home last night to spend the
week end with his wife, but instead
of going home, went to the dance.

AS TO BOLL WEEVIL MACHINES.
Nothing Practical Has Been Found,
Says Prof. A. F. Conradi.
Clemson College, Jan. 29.?There
is a considerable demand for testing
different menthods and machines for
catching and controlling the boll J
weevil. While a great number of solutions
and mechanical devices have
been tested during the last twenty
years, so far none have been found
practical, says Prof. A. F. Conradi. a
recognized authority on the boll weevil.
The fact, however, that these
have been failures does not guarantee
that some practical conrivance may
not be devised.
Frequently farmers purchase too
quickly the devices that are offered
for sale. Those who have had the

tions have learned to proceed cautiously.
While the division of Entomology
of Clemson College is glad at all times
to cooperate with any well meaning
person or firm in trying a new method
or machine, it distinctly withholds
any opinions until the tests have been
completed and the results clearly
shown. If a method has merit it will
be supported, and if it has not merit
it will be so reported. Tests made
this spring can not be reported on
until we know the product in pounds
of seed cotton during the fall. A
machine may do many interesting
things, but if it fails to proportionately
increase the yield, then it has
little or no value.
