GOVERNOR REMOVES SANDERS.
Says Conduct in Office Such as to
Warrant Removal of Sheriff.
Columbia, Jan. 23.?Alleging that
the conduct in office such as to warrant
his removal and to nullify any
effort he might make as chief peace
officer of his county, Governor Cooper,
in ?.n executive order tonight revoked
the co.amission of J. Olin Sanders,
sheriff of Anderson county, and directs
him to surrender his prerogative
to Charles G. King, of Anderson, who
is named as his successor.
Sheriff Sanders was appointed by
Governor Cooper to succeed Joe M.
H. Ashley, the latter resigned as
sheriff of Anderson county, January
28, 1919.
The preamble of the order recites
that E. M. O'Bryant, a policeman of
the city of Anderson, on the night of
October 16, 1919, discovered his wife
and Sheriff Sanders locked together
in a bed room of the O'Bryant home
and that O'Bryant was covered with
a revolver 4in the hand of the sheriff
and told that if he moved he would
be killed. An affidavit of the police*
man, attached to the order of the
governor alleges that both Sheriff
Sanders and Mrs. O'Bryant admitted
to him that they had been guilty of
illicit relations.
Makes General Denial.
Recently Sheriff Sanders appeared
at the governor's office, in response
to an order to show cause and filed a
general denial to the charges against
him, and, at the same time, contested
the executive authority to remove
him from office.
"While the said J. Olin Sanders,"
said the order, "in his return makes
a general denial of the charges embraced
in the rule to show cause, I
nrmcfrlor that hp baa failed utterly
to refute the charges embraced in
the affidavit of the said policeman,
E. M. O'Brvant. It is therefore concluded
that the affidavit is based upon
fact. I consider, this being true, the
conduct on the part of the said sheriff,
was such as necessarily must have
been premeditated, and certainly in
the mind of any right thinking man
would have been such conduct as
would naturally have brought about
some serious trouble."
At the request of S. E. Whitten,
foreman of the grand jury of Anderson
county, the books of the sheriff
were examined by James H. Craig,
' State bank exapiner, on the order
of the governor, and various irregularities
were alleged in the subsequent
report", but the governor said,
in his order, that he will "not consider
any part of the case against
the said appointee which involves in!
any sense misappropriations of funds
and irregularities as shown in his
record."
TORTURE CHAMBERS IN USE.
Director Will Place Matter Refore
Secretary of War.
1 ___________
New York, Jan. 22.?Charges that
iron torture chambers have been introduced
by Col. R. D. Johnson, ex
ecutive officer at Alcatraz Island, San
Francisco', in which conscientious objectors
of the "absolute" type imprisoned
on the island are placed,
were contained in a statement issued
here tonight by the National Civil
Liberties bureau, has left for Washington,
it was stated, to place the matter
before Secretary Baker.
' Robert Simmons, who is serving ten
years as a conscientious objector, after
being kept in solitary confineent,
has been "transferred to the
latest torturing device in which he
is at present kept," the statement
declared. "He is unable to sit down,
lie down or fully stand; it is practically
an iron straight jacket into
which the prisoner is squeezed.
"The dimensions of this torture |
chamber are six feet high, 23 inches j
in length, and one foot broad. It is j
absolutely dark ir- ide, the only air j
obtainable being from the^top of the!
cage.
"Tlr's cage is so made that it fits
into the cell of the prisoner. When the
> cell door is closed it forms the fourth
side of the cage."
The statement said that four of
these iron cages were manufactured
in the prison machine shop by orders
of Colonel Johnson.

Atlanta Man Says That He Feels Like

"I wouldn't take one hundred dollars
for this bottle of FERROLAX if

who lives at 32S West Peachtree St..

"I honestly believe that FERROLAX

it would just do my heart good to
meet face to face with everybody who
suffers as T did and tell them what
a blessing this wonderful medicine
has been to me. I was so run down
and had such poor blood that I could
hardly get about. Then too I was
bothered with stomach trouble, and
would have severe pains in the small
f my back right over my kidneys,
'^ 'hen I-stooped oter for anything I
could hardly straighten up again. No
medicine or treatment seemed to give
me any relief at all and I was gradually
getting weaker all the time.
Then I heard about FERROLAX
and the good it has done so many
people and decided to give it a trial.
Before I had finished my first bottle
I began picking up right along and
now since taking about three bottles
of this medicine am as well and
strong as I ever was in my life. I
don't know what it is to suffer with
indigestion and stomach trouble, and
I am never bothered with that pain
in my back. I'll tell the world that
FERROLAX is a real medicine, and
will do all that is claimed for R."

A FAMILY

In Her Mother's Home, Says This
Georgia Lady, Regarding BlackDraught
Relief From Headache,
Malaria, Chills, Etc*
Ringgold, Ga.? Mrs. Chas. Gaston,
of this place, writes: "I am a nser
of Thedford's Black-Draught; in fact,
It was one of our family medicines.
Also In my mother's home, when I
was a child. When any of us children
complained of headache, usually
caused by constipation, she gave us
a dose of Black-Draught, which would
rectify the trouble. Often In the
Spring, we would have malaria and
chills, or troubles of this kind, we
would take Black-Draught pretty regular
until the liver acted well, and
we would soon be up and around

agam. we wuuiu not oe wimuui it,
for it certainly has saved us lots of
doctor bills. Just a dose of BlackDraught
when net bo well saves a
lot of days in bed."
Thedford's Black-Draught has been
In use for many years in the treatment
of stomach, liver and bowel
troubles, and the popularity which it
now enjoys is proof of its merit
If your liver is not doing its duty,
you will suffer from such disagreeable
symptoms as headache, biliousness,
constipation, indigestion, etc.,
and unless something is done, serious
trouble may result
Thedford's Black-Draught has been
found a valuable remedy for these
troubles. It is purely vegetable, and
acts In a prompt and natural way,
regulating the liver to its iJroper
functions and cleansing the bowels of
impurities. Try it. Insist on Thedford's.
