W$t Bamberg $eralb ESTABLISHED APRIL, 1891. Published Weekly at Bamberg, S. C. Entered as second-class matter April 1891, under Act of March 3, 1879. $2.00 PER YEAR. Volume 29. No. 5. Thursday, January 29,1920. THE TAX MATTER. The State could save a good deal of money if the State tax commission were done away with. They could also save the people some trouble. If there is a single useless commission in South Carolina?and there are probably several of them?the State tax commission must undoubtedly be the most useless. After the office has been abolished, let some legislator introduce and have passed a law to tax property according to what it is worth and that will end the mat* ter. If a man owns a fifty thousand dollar stock of goods, let him pay taxes on fifty thousand dollars. If he owns a fifty thousand dollar farm let him pay taxes on fifty thousand dollars. Why all this percentage business, the business that requires a man running a little store which m ' \ barely makes a living for himself and his family to pay more taxes than the owner of one of the finest farms in the State? Any justice in that? Looks very m. ~h as ir tne State tax commission has run out of something to do. |fe ^ *m* * PERSONAL MENTION. People Visiting in This City and at Other Points. pr-v .v ?Mr. C. E. Little Eulalee, the eight year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Ehrtiardt, died at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. S. A. Rowell, Monday morning after an illness of several weeks. The remains were buried on Tuesday afternoon at Ehrhardt. During most of her life the girl had made her home with her grandmother. For some time past she had suffered with an abcess in the head, and about three or four weeks ago the child had to take to her bed. For several days previous to her death little hope was held out for her life, and death came as a relief for her intense suffering.
