LAW ENFORCEMENT.
m
<
Last Friday night at midnight constitutional
prohibition became effectlve
throughout America. This was
an event that is memorable in the
history of the nation?an event that
has been the dream and hope of many
people for years and years. Now
. that it is an accomplished fact, the
" people
of the country should unite in
its enforcement. Even the most rabid
anti-prohibitionists concede that
if enforced prohibition is a great
thing.
In the interest of good government,
it is the duty of every loyal citizen to
assist in bringing about usch a healthy
sentiment that prohibition will be
possible not only as a law but in reality.
Prohibition is possible only
jfV - j
when the people unite in desiring its
enforcement.
It may be unfortunate for constitu
uonai proniDiuon luat it uecumes eifective
during this present era of unrest.
From another viewpoint,^radical
changes are so common now that
perhaps it may be the most opportune
moment for the appearance of this
law, which has been inevitable for
several years.
The people have seen what the barroom
is. The people of the nation
are, without a doubt, overwhelmingly
opposed to the further operation of
the saloon. Even states like New
York ratified the law by large majorities.
'
But there is now a very serious
danger to be faced?that of the illicit
liquor dealer or maker. The character
of the stuff that is made by these
bootleggers adds to the horror of this
situation. Whether you favor prohi-1

bition or not, as a good citizen you j

eradication of this iniquitous industry
which is wreaking such havoc or
people who will insist on drinking
concoctions that have alcohol ir
them.
Prohibition and all other laws car
be enforced, but it will be the people
i after all who will do most towarc
achieving this end. Officers can onlj
do what the j)eople they represenl
want them to do. When a majority 01
the people of Bamberg county reallj
! want prohibition enforced, the officers
will have no difficulty in doing it.
Court meets in Bamberg next week,
Will the liquor makers be allowed
to again pay their license to the court
and go scot free? It may be contempt
of court to stand up in the courtroom
and suggest to the court what ought
to be done, yet we are almost persuaded
that if a number of good citizens
should do it they would not
be punished.
W. J. BRYAN.
The ghost of Banquo has nothing
on the Honorable William Jennings
<?
Bryan. Many times defeated, he
vcomes to life again with a rush. The
newspapers look with varying solutions
upon his latest break into the
; front page. Some credit him with
i seeking the Democratic nomination
at San Francisco this summer; nobody
credits him with what is verj
I likely his real reason for coming
| again into the limelight, namely, a
genuine desire to advance the welfare
of his fellow man. We are no Bryanites.
We think it would be a partj
misfortune to nominate him for president,
because the present outldok is
that he would repeat his past performance
and go down in defeat. Bui
for Bryan the man we have a greai
deal of respect. We do not mean tc
say that we sanction everything he
| has done, but he has performed manj
noble acts for which he deserves the
thanks of the people. We did nol
admire the way he showed the white
feather and left the Wilson cabinet in
a crisis, but we do admire his efforts
to secure peace in the world. In the
present instance, though, we are oi
the very candid opinion that Bryan
