Thursday, January 8,1920 Kerosene has been steadily "advancing for several months. m ! > Rockefeller has given another hundred millions to education. This is election year, you know. Meet your friends with a smile. m ??> ^ The only thing we don't like about the deportation of the Reds is that there were not enough of them on the ark. They say that fashion reverses itself every now and then. The pres{V? ?. 7 .' * ent fashion is to wear dresses with. out backs. V'*'- . There is just one thing that would probably be better than deportation for Reds and others of that stripe, namely, decapitation. m hi m The lady up North wno ta.nted because her fiance failed to turn up was not so bad off after all. He was already marr.'ed too much. It certainly is a shame that baseball players are not paid more. Who blames that fellow for refusing a pal; r. try twenty thousand a year? ^ Somebody says the cost of living : has advanced 82 per cent. s:nce 1914. Whoever sa'd it evidently has no bills * to pay. Wish it were 82 per cent.! There may be, after all, worse people in the world than the radical who wrote the "instructions" beginning V with "down with the senate and congress!" There's nothing like living and learning. We have just this minute learned for the first time in our young and innocent life that there is such a place in South Carolina as Straw* v . ^ 4.^. i;?n Deny. must oe & uiue yiauc iu n*o. [ It you published a newspaper, you would wonder when you saw all the publicity stuff from presidential can' dldates whether. or not it is really true that there are a hundred million people in the U. S. A. not running for ||gs president. ^ ie> ? AUTOMOBILE SPEEDING. An end ought to be put to automo. bile speeding. We are usually impressed along about Christmas time with the seribusness of speeding, because of the number of accidents that occur, not because it is Christmas . time, but more likely because there is more travel then. But the same rule holds good all the year round. It A*/ ought to be generally understood that a person guilty of speeding is going to be sentenced to pay a heavy fine. felt that same person is up a second time he ought to be sent to jail. Wanton and reckless driving is a menace to the public, people get kill' ed or maimed by it every day, and it is best to stop the speeding before the fatal accident occurs. Most people in Bamberg respect the speed law. Many of them do not. Held On Charge of Killing Wife. :* * Laurens, Jan. 1.?Charged with having murdered his wife last night and then set fire to his own cabin 3*-"home, in which lay the body of his wife, and by her side the fourteenmonths-old baby of the couple, both of whom were burned with the house, Will Motes, a negro tenant, living ' "mi- Trnss Hill, was today brought here by Pol'ceman Bryson. The bodies of the two victims of the fire were burned into an unrecogniable mass. Motes stoutly denies the double crime. ^ ! ? ? Foiled at Last. i "Algy fell in love with a girl at the ! glove counter. He bought gloves I every day for a week. To discourage h*s attentions she became a manieu[ rist." "Then he had his nails manicured I every day, I suppose?" [ \ "Just so. However, I don't think he will follow her any farther." "Why not?" "Then she got an employment with a dentist."?London Tit-Bits. j Roumanian Military Men Dandies, i The Roumanian, at least the city| resident, Is extremely fond of per fume, scented soap, rouge, cosmetics and other artificial aids to beauty.1 This applies not only to the women but to the men. The average young Roumanian army officer is scented, powdered, rouged and often, it is said, corseted! His habits mark him for a good deal of raillery on the part of foreign officers and visitors. In dress he Is as faultless as a Beau Brummel and in manner as polite as a Lord Ches'enfield. He Is seen at his best on Saturday or Sunday afternoon on ths Calse Victoria (the Fifth avenue ol Bucharest). Dressed in a sky-blue uniform, gaud Ily trimmed with red, high patent* j leather boots with silvered spurs that clink musically as he walks, glisten-i lng sword at side, white kid gloves and many military decorations, he makei a striking figure. Answered the Purpose. The assignment in the English composition class at Scipio was the supplying of the feminine equivalent term when the teacher gave out the masculine term. All was going lovely, duke with the answer duchess, mar quis and marchioness, but "lord" brought no answer until Johnnie stumbled on to his answer out of his every day vocabulary?"lordy."
