Substitute for Platinum
Is Invented by Illinois

Kroiessor or unemisiry
k -1.
Illhim Is the name of the new metal
a substitute for platinum, thai
has bean discovered by Prof. S. W
Parr of the department of chemistrj
at the University of Illinois.
"According to Professor Parr the importance
of this new metal lies in th?
iact that It can be substituted for plati
mm or gold in acid tests. Its price I>
another factor. Illium costs approxi
( mately 25 cents an ounce.
Other alloys have been found toe
brittle. They can be cast, but no'
machined like illium. Every rod ol
Illium which is made has a button cu*
from the end, which is given a 24-houi
add test These buttons are weighed
before and after the test and as yel
the difference in weight has not beer
appreciable.
The first mixture of this alloy wfi
made in April, 1917.

Must Keep Climbing.
Yon can never let down the bars
when yon want to become great. The
price Is eternal vigilance. Even when
success is assured you must keep on
going. Men who become great by
spurts usually sink Into insignificance
the same way. Besides making up
your mind that you are going to succeed,
you must see to it that you realize
what's In your mind. Talking
about what you expect to do will never
bring it to pass. The up-hill is always
before you. The only way to reach
the top is to climb. Bf you can com
mand the means that takes yon there I
It will save your energy for jjther j
things. Usually the energy you de-1
velop through the climb will be useful ,
in days to come. The climb may tire
you, but It will also make you appreciate
the view.?Grit.
Ancient Indian Burial Ground.
Beneath roots of two large trees two
Indian skulls and other bones of the
human body were found by workmen
leveling mounds in the city park on
the shores of Lake BemidJI, Minn.
The skulls and bones were badly
decayed, but the teeth were in fairly
good condition. Charcoal in large
quantities was found in the vicinity
of the bones, which indicates that the
place was an Indian burial pyre, old j
residents say.
It Is believed that beneath the
mound may be found many more I
bodies, but the workmen merely re-!
moved the top earth and, with the ex-1
ception of a few bones which were
gathered by souvenir seekers, the
skeletons were, again buried.
No Doubt of That
"Of course, you know that whisky
is poison?"
"Yes," replied Uncle Bill Bottletop;
"any kind you can buy now is mighty
Uktly to be."
Relative Values.
"The Bomme; boarders will soon be
going home."
'Tm glad of It," said Farmer Corntossel.
"Tm getttin' kind o* tired of
givin' up all this precious food for
mere money." N
