f TAKE
NO CHANCES WITH "FLU."
State and Federal Health Authorities
Busy.
Already State and federal health
authorities are taking steps to combat
influenza, and should an epidemic of
the disease occur in South Carolina
this fall, the State will be in readiness
so far as is humanly possible to
meet it.
Dr. James A. Hayne, secretary of
the State board of health, is in receipt
of a conAnunication from Rupert
Blue, surgeon general of the United
States public health service, urging
that steps be taken to prepare for
the possible recurrence of influenza
in epidemic form during the fall and
winter. While health authorities do
not positively predict that the scourge
will return the surgeon general con-j
eludes that if proper protective and I
precautionary measures be taken |
there need be no repetition of lastl
year's toll of misery and death.
Want to Enroll Doctors.
The names of 100 physicians who
are willing to serve in case of emererannv
under the direction of the State
?
health officer are directed by Surgeon
General Blue. These physicians are
to hold themselves in readiness for a
< call to service in any part of the
State. -r .-. :^7;,rr. .. - Compensation
is offered at the rate
of $20C per month for salary with an
allowance of $4 per diem for subsistence
and with railroad fare paid.
The salary and expenses of these
physicians are to be borne by the
>
United States public health service.
The State health officer expects an
immediate and generous response to
this call for physicians. "The physicians
of South Carolina are highly
conscious of their duty and are naturally
anxious to do all in their power
to avert all unnecessary hardship
. and suffering among the people whom
they are pledged to serve and pro'
tect," says Dr. Hayne. "No physi,
' ciaij who volunteers will be called
from his own community if local con
ditions are such as to demand his
presence," said Dr. Hayne.
The service rendered during the
v. epidemic last fall by the public health
service remains clear in the memory
of the public. ' Seventy doctors and
nurses were employed and their serv.
ices were'given to South Carolina,
the public health service meeting the
> - , * expense. The Red Cross assisted
* greatly in supplying nurses and in
several cases hospital supplies.
Will Assist Again.
"Generous assistance will be forth'
coming again this year from" the
public health service," said the health
WM-- officer yesterday. "If the need arises
Surgeon General Blue will employ
5' 100 South Carolina physicians for
epidemic duty in this State. '
Passed Assistant Surgeon C. V.
Akin, United States public health officer,
said yesterday that he would be
glad to receive applications from physicians
and to submit names to the
surgeon general for appointment.
