ONLY HALF THK HANSOM PAID, j
The Sum of $15,000.00 Was Demanded
and Sent.
A telegram Tuesday from Marfa,
Texas, said:
Lieutenants F. G. Peterson and
Paul H. Davis, aviators of the United
States army, held captive for
more than a week by the Mexican
bandits who demanded a ransom of
were rescued early this
morning by Captain Matlock, of the
Eighth cavalry, and are safe in American
territory.
Captain Matlock brought back with
him one-half of the ransom money.
He said after Peterson had been released
Davis was brought forward by
the bandits and the two mounted
Matlock's horse. The bandits demaned
the remainder of the ransom
money from Captain Matlock, and
Davis answered by riding rapidly
away.
The aviators landed from the American
side of the river. Lieutenant
Peterson said. Upon their arrival at
Candelaria a week ago Sunday their
engine developed trouble and they
were forced to land.
The two aviators then tried to find
their way to the nearest army camp
and became confused. They walked .
and swam down the Rio Grande duri
ing Monday, Lieutenant Peterson
said, and then hired Mexican burros
after Peterson developed a fever.
They had started for Candelaria
when an armed Mexican overtook
them and made them prisoners. They
were unarmed.
They were overtaken by a band of
armed bandits. Lieutenant Peterson
said, and a crowd of people from a
little town. They continued on their
forced journey until Friday night,
when the bandits compelled the aviators
to write messages demanding
ransom and telling of the death
threat.

DAYLIGHT ACT REPEALED.
Senate Joins With House in Writing
Finis to Bill Twice Vetoed.
' ' i
Washington, Aug. 20.?Repeal of
the daylight saving act was accomplished
today, the senate voting to
sustain the house in passing the measure
over the president's veto. The
vote was 57 to 19.
The repeal of the law which now
takes its place among the very few
which have been passed over a presidential
veto becomes effective after
the clocks are turned back to normal
in October. It will go down in legislative
history as one of the very few
measures which have twice been vetoed
by a president and become a
y law after all by the vote of more than
two-thirds in both houses of congress.
