DIES FROM OWN HAM).
Henry Hinton, Convict Guard, Shoots
Self at Abl>eville.
Abbeville, Aug. 13.?Henry Hinton
ended his life this afternoon by
shooting himself through the head*
with a pistol. The shooting occurred
at the home of J. B. Gordon. Eye
witnesses testified at the inquest that
Hinton came to Abbeville to marry
Miss Gordon and that he pulled his
pistol and shot himself when she refused.
Hinton was employed as a
1 convict guard by Greenwood county.

first time. My impressions of your
city are most striking.
On my way up here the railroad
shopmen struck. The day following
my arrival the Brooklyn car men
struck. Last night the actors struck
for shorter hours. Tomorrow the
prisoners on Blackwell's Island will
strike for shorter months or whatever
time they are "in" for.
I am writing with pencil on account
of the hotel pens being on a strike. I
must not use a typewriter as I would
have to strike the keys. Last night
a well dressed man struck me for car
fare at Ninety-sixth Street. Said he
wanted to go to the Christian Scientist
Church. As the odor of his
breath reached me it struck me that
he was a liar, also that New York was
not as dry as I had been led to believe.

REV. MATTHEWS MAKES DENIAL.
Editor The Bamberg Herald:?I
ask space in your columns to emphatically
deny some red hot lies of the
blackest hue circulated against me
a little over a week ago in the town
of Bamberg and perhaps in the vicinity.
I wish to state that it is now 35
years last March since I started to
preach the gospel of peace to both
white and colored people, and I am
doing the same yet. I do not wait
to go in the pulpit, but every chance
I have I preach in the hedges and
byways.
The first lie I heard was that I
told some colored people some time
and somewhere that they must not
pick cotton for less than $2.50 per
100 pounds. This I assert as lie No.
i Vioii Vioovan onH haplr frnm
JL liU ill 11 CI i 1U UV/U* V/ii
heaven to hell.
Lie No. 2 is equivalent to the lie
the devil told in the Garden of Eden,
and that was that I had sent to Midway,
S. C., a coffin filled with guns
and pistols to the negroes to have
an insurrection with the white people.
I am sure his excellency. R. A.
. Cooper, did not think of doing anything
like that, and neither have I.
There is no man of color and there is
no white manjn South Carolina who
wants and works for peace, good will
and harmony between the two races
-more than H. H. Matthews. T am
glad to say that I have stood for
good will and respect between the
races since I was a hoy, and no
white man or black man shall change
me from this attitude. Cod helping
me. Of course, this Xo. 2 lie outranks
the one the devil told in the
Garden of Eden, and the devil himself
is ashamed of it. Mr. Editor. T
do not believe that a single sane
white man or colored man believes
it.
Lie Xo. 3 was circulated last Sunday
morning one week ago. that the
Mt. Carmel M. E. church bell rang to
call out the colored men to raise a
riot with the white people. I have
/ been knowing the present pastor.
Rev* R. A. CottiDsffiam. for fully 36
years, and everywhere he has gone
he, like myself, has endeavored to
preach the gospel of peace to his
race and encourage friendly relations
between the races, and anv who doubt
this statement have simplv to call on
Dr. Cottingham and read what the
white peoDle have said about rum
and who they believed he was. The
/ bell was run? for what is known
eenerallv among the Methodist people
as "the Sunday morning sunrise
prayer meeting service." There are
some hypocrites in both races who
are no friends to either, who wish
to see fusses and riots between white
and colored people, but the better
elements of both races, God helping
them, intend to keep down such
things, for fusses and riots do not
help either race, but good will and
esteem for each other will go a long
way.
The devil's imps must surely be
ashamed of this No. 3 lie. Rev. Cottingham
raised over $400 last year
from one of his churches for the Red
Cross cause and work in unsion with
the white people, just as I have done
in Bamberg county. All T had was
swept away by fire on the 31st of
January of this year. T thank all
who came to my rescue, and the majority
who aided me in Bamberg city
or county were white people. An
ingrate is one of the worst things in
the world. I thank God T am not an
ingrate. and I brand all that was said
about me as finished lies.
H. H. MATTHEWS.
