Hare Issues Report of Leading S. C. Crops on August 1. Saluda, Aug. 10.?According to a report issued by B. B. Hare, field agent, Bureau of Crop Estimates, United States Department of Agriculture, the condition of the leading growing^crops in South Carolina, excepting cotton, on August 1, was as follows: Corn 80 per cent, of normal; rice 85 per cent; hay 90; millet 88; cowpeas 83; Irish potatoes 82; sweet potatoes 85; tobacco 74; onions 8 sorghum for feed 85; sorghum for syrup 85; peanuts'85; watermelons 70; muskmelons 70; apples 45; peaches 42; grapes 78; pears 55. The condition of corn in the eastern and northwestern counties is from "good" to "excellent," in the central and southwestern counties it ranges from "very poor" to "good." A larere norcentage of the acreage of late plantings has been abandoned ' on account of the excessive rains during the latter half of July and a considerable percentage of that planted on bottom lands has been destroyed by overflow of creeks and rivers. The total production is estimated at 38,900,000 bushels, which is approxi3. ' mately 600,000 bushels more than last year but 2,000,000 bushels less k.. than in 1917. The peavine hay acreage is much smaller than usual, because of tho scarcity and high price of seed, but the prospects for good yields are very promising. All fruits and vegetables were injured to a greater or less extent du*V.tt + Vi sx-tnHniirmQ iUg CUC UIVSUCU U> cue vviinu"v-k/ heavy rains. Marked deterioration in condition of tobacco since last report is noted, the condition tn July 1, being 85 per cent, of normal and only 7 4 per cent, on August 1. Where there has been proper cultivation sweet potatoes appear to be in excellent condition, although an unusual growth of vines usually indicates small potatoes with few in a hill. Total production of corn for the kv entire United States is estimated at 2,788,000,000 bushels as compared with 2,583,000,000 bushels in 1918 and 3,065,000,000 bushels in 1917. The production of wheat is placed in round numbers at 840,000,000 bushels, or approximately 25,000,000 bushels more than last year. f I ; M gf^ - V A^A A ATA A^A J^k ^ Ijp* ^ y it has w :s. ' The following from the Anderson Mail will be read with interest here by the friends of Dr. John E. White, pastor of the first Baptist church of Anderson, and also president of Anderson Female College. After having been notified that a case charging him with speeding had been docketed at the city hall, Dr. John E. White wrote a letter to Mayor Fant pleading guilty to the charge and enclosing a check for $25, the minimum fine for such offense. Dr. White, according to his letter, is of the opinion that every man in the city who runs an automobile, ought one time every year to go down and plead guilty of running somewhere, sometimes a little over 28 miles an hour within the corporate limits and on the paved streets, just for conscience sake. The letter was an enjoyable one throughout and-the mayor was congratulated on the alertness of his administration. All speeders seem to have the same appearaance to the men who carry the watches.
