Aug. 3.?The red spider is taking quite a toll from the cotton crop aroujid Blackville. Up to the recent heavy rains there was a prospect of a good crop. The rains have i damaged the crop quite considerably, but the red spider has caused a much greater damage. Some farmers have I been practically ruined. One reason it has spread so. is the farmers were not familiar with it and let it get too 1 much hold before doing anything to stop the destruction. In many instances it was thought lightning had struck the cotton and no more attention was paid it until the spider | had gotten in considerable damage. The spider is very small, but gets on the under side of the leaf and im[ mediatelv the leaf besins to turn red and soon turns dry and parches up. The spider seems to poison the stalk, for not only the small bolls but even j ! the large bolls dry up and rot. There had been so much cotton that has died from red spider this season until many thought it was root wilt and let it get too much hold before fighting it. | Every effort is being made now to j stop the destruction, both hand and ; barrel sprays have been ordered and the work is going on under the instruction of the farm demonstrai tion agent. NEW STILL FAILS IX PURPOSE. Cherokee Officers Take it in Hand Before Any Whiskey is Made. Gaffnev, August 2.?Officers C. Y. Allison, Charles Bvers and Deputy Sheriff J. E. Watkins, and Arthur Hopper captured a distillery of about 30 gallons capacity, on what is known as the Cowpens Furnace place yesterday. The outfit had been installed, j but no whiskey had been made there| on, and it is thought that the operaj tors either had not commenced to j manufacture the booze, or else they f became frightened, and decided that discretion was the better part of valor. The oufit was brought to Gaffnev, and was stored in the museum of | Sheriff Thomas, who is possessed of a j number of similar souvenirs. j !R-DEFINITELY fEW SERIES in a car means just- as much as rour standard of judgment.
