INCOMPREHE EFFE The following are extracts from ad-; : dresses delivered by J. Skottowe j Wannamaker, president South Caro-, lina Bankers' Association, at the annual convention of the South Caro- j i lina Bankers' Association, at Tybee Island, Georgia, on June 17, 1919. We realize more fully than ever today the truth of "for a thousand1 years in thy sight are but as yesterday." Today we have a new world, a complete change in every phase of human . existence. One year ago 50,000,000 men were under arms and 150,000,000 others were engaged in war activities. All of the industries and j resources of our nation were con-1 verted unto mobilizing arms and the production of munitions. The world's interest was then centered into a small line extending from the northern coast line of Belgium to Switzerland, a few hundred miles in length; the destiny of freedom and liberty hung in the balance. Today the banners of Prussian militarism would be waving over the rampants of all of Europe. America would be engaged in a desperate combat with Prussianism to save America for democracy, had not the Almighty in keeping with his divine purpose brought America forward at the crucial moment. We should, of course, be truly hap py and thankful that today peace nas come. Let us, however, consider and discuss some of the problems that peace will bring. America has saved the world for democracy. In this short period America has changed her swaddling clothes to the garments of a king. Her duties and responsibilities are increased ten thousand fold. The future of the j white race depends absolutely upon j America. The destiny of Europe, from every standpoint, is now in the hands of America, and it can equally be truthfully said that the future of the world depends today upon America. America must finance Europe. It * is now absolutely the duty of America to make the world a safe place to live in. We can not shirk. The duties and responsibilities of every loyal son of America is increased a thousand fold. It has been said that: "Duty is a power which rises with us in the morning, and goes to rest with us at night. It is coextensive with the action of our intelligence. It is the shadow which cleaves to us go where we will, and which leaves as only when we leave the light of life." History Begins Anew. Statistics show that the world war was the struggle of the a^es; that unborn generations will view human history as starting anew with this war. It separates the old and new, and ushers in a new world, a far better "world. As an outgrowth ot the woria War humanity will be upon a higher plane. The following figures were obtained from the most reliable sources in America, being the result of inquiries sent to the heads of the national government, heads of banking departments of the leading banks of America.
