Hundred Millions for Swamp Lands, j

** Washington, Jan. 4.?Representative
Byrnes, of South Carolina, today
introduced in the house a bill appropriating
$100,000,000 for draining
swamp lands of the nation and selling
the reclaimed lands to soldiers
and sailors. The price would be
based on the cost of the reclamation
of the land plus 4 per cent, interest,
the purchaser to be given 4 years in
which to pay. At least one project
would be established in each State
of the Union.
i Last year Mr. Byrnes had included !
in an appropriation bill an appropriation
for a survey of swamp lands for
f this purpose and the president and
" the secretary of the interior have indorsed
the project, Secretary Lane
now urging congress to pass the bill.

30th Division Will Come Home Soon.
Washington, Jan. 4.?The demobilization
of the army is approaching its

the combat divisions in this country
and the issuance of orders for early
return of the first three fighting divisions
from France.
General March, chief of staff, announced
today General Pershing had
designated the Thirtieth and Thirtyseventh
(National Guard) and the
Ninety^first (National Army) Divisions
for early return, while in the
home training camps 40,500 men of
the combat divisions, heretofore held
intact had been ordered discharged.
The three overseas divisions wim
the headquarters troops of Major
General Reed's Second Corps, also
designated for return, total 83,000
men. General March said that including
these divisions, the total number
of men available for discharge was 1,379,000
and that 40,491 officers and
630,309 men had been mustered out
up to yesterday.
The chief of staff also disclosed
that the war department was preparing
to take ihto the regular army under
the proposed reorganization plan,
those reserve and temporary officers
whose records during the war show
them to be fitted for professional military
life.
Boiler Room Falls, Kills Fireman.
Greenville, Jan. 1.?Tom Mills,
fireman, was killed and James Casey
and Lee Suddeth were severely injured
when the boiler room at the Victor
cotton mill at Greer collapsed this
morning. Suddeth is a white man.
The body of the fireman was recovered
late this afternoon from- beneath
a mass of brick and coal. The collapse
is believed to have been due to
a large amount of coal backed against
the wall of the building. Lee suddeth,
who sustained a fractured
shoulder, was taken to a hospital at
Spartanburg.
