Letters From "Over There."

Mr. Carl Weimar, former sporting
1 - />! 1 A
| editor oi tue vnanesiuu news auu
Courier, writes his cousin, Mrs. J.
G. Rhoad, of Hunter's Chapel, as follows
from France:
"With the Colors" August 16,
1918. My Dear Cousin Leila: Was
- more than glad to get your letter and
was especially glad to know that all
were well and that Clare is doing
nicely. We cannot tell where we are
stationed but it's quite a distance
from where he is and it is very, unlikely
that we shall meet any time
4 soon. Of course I do not know but
that is my guess.
Pers8nally I am well and getting
along fine. Believe that I have gained
considerably since seeing you last
and this sun has us all as brown as
can be. More of a tan color. But
there was room for much improvement,
was there not? Was sorry
myself that I did not get to see you
before leaving but explained before
that I did not get away from Greenville
after once getting there. That
has been almost a year ago.
Your telling me of those watermplnns
chickens, aranes and the like
made my eyes as well as my mouth
water, for you know how I do evermore
love to eat. Tell Cousin Jule
[ that I had an awful experience the
I other day. Opened an American
magazine and in colors was an advertisement
of Cream of Wheat showing
among other things a negro and
a whole watermelon (cut in half). It
was too mucfrN I just had to stare at
that picture and groan and groan. It
was so real yet so far away.
We have had a few men in our
troop wounded, three of them. The
same shell that wounded them also
wounded three others (officers) and
killed T. R. Summers, of Orangeburg.
Probably you know him. His father
is of the firm of Razor & Summers, of
Orangeburg, and he was certainly a
fine young fellow. He was not killed
instantly but died of his wounds a
few hours after receiving them. One
of our men was on guard at the time
r
- '
and although he had all toes sho'
off of one foot and was wounded ii
several other places, he refused tc
leave his post until relieved and con
tinued walking.
King George, of England, was on ?
visit to some of his stroops not Ions
ago and we saw him. It was mj
first sight of a real king. He wai
due to arrive at a certain village ai
a certain time. He was about tei
minutes ahead of time and remaine(
at this place for a few minutes. A
the exact time he was scheduled t<
arrive the first of four shells fron
the Germans came over. Nobody no:
anything was injured though.
There are more little villages ii
the countries over here than yoi
could ever imagine. Every half mil<
or so vou find one no matter in whicl
direction you go.
Was surprised as well as sorry tc
hear that Cousin Hansford had died
Express my sorrow to each membei
of the family will you not?
You know more about the figh
that the Americans are putting up o]
as much as we do for our paperi
(U. S. A.) have much more news thai
we get over here. They are doinf
wonderfully well and there is n(
doubt about it that there are non<
better than the American soldiers.
France is a beautiful country anc
no wonder that they will sacrifice sc
much for it. They are a truly won
derful people in every respect.
You asked about Townsend Weim<
ar and Con Cassidy."T"was discharg
ed from the army some months ag(
on account of his physical conditioi
and is now at a shipyard 'lumbei
inspector) at Brunswick.
Con is a first lieutenant and smc<
getting his commission has been sta
tioued at Arizona or New Mex-co. ]
forget which.
Give my regards and lpve to all anc
keep much for yourself. Lovingly,
CARL.
Here is an interesting letter fron
Mr. Claud Smoak to Mr. A. M. Den
bow:
"With the Colors" Aug. 22, 1918
Dear Dennie:?I don't know if ]
have written you before. I think ]
did send you a card, but really yot
don't have so piuch spare time tc
write anybody. Since being over her*
I have seen a few things and it seems
like I have hiked all over Europe. 1
have been in the last four months ii:
four different countries. We are nov
in about the worst place we have
been yet and I believe too that w<
are going to stay in this vicinity foi
quite a while. At least until "Fritz'
decides to move us or we decide tc
move him. Things are getting prettj
lively now tho' and I suspect before
long it will be moving day for one ol
us. I wish I could tell you exactly
where I am but of course I cannot
In fact the censorship is awfull}
strict anyway. I can tell you I have
been in1 the line for a good while now
The life?well, it's hard. You can'i
sleep for the rats and "cooties" will
get on you in spite of everything yoi
can do. The trenches and billets an
all full of them. ,The last time wt
came out of thfe line I bet I had al
least one thousand on me. I had ?
good time tho' when we were in train,
.ing in France. After you get in the
forward area tho-you can certainly
look to catch the devil from ther
until then on.
I wish I could write you more bu
what w*e say of course is limited
Give my regards to "Miss Allie" anc
tell her that I won't forget the nighl
she fed a hungry soldier.
Write me sometimes and let m<
know how things are running in the
ofd town. Your old Friend.
SMOAK.
Mr. Clair Rhoad writes from the
front as follows:
On Active Service with the Ameri
can Expeditionary Force, Aug. 10
1918. My Dear Mother:?Spent mosi
of the day up town with a class mate
of mine, |Ie also worked at Greens
boro while I was there. He is the
first friend I have seen since leaving
the States and believe me I was glac
to see him. I also ran into a Lt
Simmons from down near Pregnalls
The nights are beginning to get ?
little cool; the days are pleasani
enough when it does not rain. 11
usually rains a little about five days
out of every week.
Am still oecimviner the histori<
ground that I was on last Sunday
The town is very old and has three
walls around it, one of which was
built in the fifteenth century and is
in good condition. The earlier ones
have long since been destroyed by the
Vandals. During one war the towr
sheltered the rulers of Germany, Aus
tria, and Russia. The road we live
on was used by Caesar and later or
Napoleon used it on hVs historic re
treat from Moscow. There are al
kinds of unbelievable tales told about
the whole neighborhood.
Just received your letter this weeP
dated July 3, so you see news is ?
little old when it gets here but an
mighty glad to get it at all.
With much love to all, your devot
ed son, CLAIR.
