SOUTHERNERS GIVEN PRAISE. Seventeen of Forty-four Officers Cited Sons of Dixie.?Two' From S. C. On August 25, General Persuing? a Southerner, born in Missouri?issued an order of the day commending the officers of the eighth division who had distinguished themselves in the great counteroffensive which hurled the Germans back from the Marne and initiated the victorious movement of the allies. It is interesting to note how largely the South is represented in this distinction as compared with other sections of the country. Forty-four officers are distinguished by name in * General Pershing's proclamation. "You have shown," said General Pershing in this historic order, "that American initiative and energy are as fit for the tasks of war as for the pursuits of peace. You have justly won unstinted praise from our allies and the eternal gratitude of our countrymen." Of the 44 officers thus cited, nine are from the East, 12 from the Middle Western States and 17 from the South. The six others are from the West or foreign born. The 17 Southern men who figured so gloriously in this epochal achievment are divided by States as follows: Virginia four, Arkansas two, Maryland one, Texas one, Tennessee one, North Carolina one, Mississippi one, West Virginia one, Alabama one, Missouri one, South Carolina two, =nd Florida one. The two South Carolinians are Col. Frank Parker, commander of an infantry regiment, and Col. George M. Bomford, also commander of an infantry regiment. Colonel Bomford ' rose from the ranks. He enlisted as i a private in the Fifth Infantry in I 1896 and was commissioned a second r lieutenant at the outbreak of the Spanish-American ,war. FIND GUNS IN CEMETERY. Nests Discovered Beneath Concrete , Pedestal of Cross. With the American Army in Lorraine, Sept. 19.?In a cemetery near Liemy, just within the German lines, previous to the attack of September 12, American troops have discovered German machine gun nests beneath the concrete pedestal of a large cross. The Germans had dug along the center of the foundation and constructed machine positions at three places facing toward the French lines. The cemetery is on a hill commanding a view of the country of the south, and the Germans assumed that if an attack was made the cemetery would not be subjected to artillery fire. When the Franco-American offen: . sive started, the Germans held the * machine gun nests in the cemetery as / ? long as possible but were compelled to retreat. So hurried was the enemy retirement that several machine guns were found in the cemetery by the Americans. The cemetery was not hit by shells and the cross still stands. / KILLED BY OFFICER. . Constable Shoots Negro to Death in Newberry County. Newberry, Sept. 18.?Coroner Lindsay was called out to the plantation of J. F. Hawkins, four miles in the country, Tuesday morning just after midnight to hold an inquest over the dead body of Ed Shears, or Ed Shell, negro, who was killed about fl o'clock Monday night by Henry D. Havird, constable of Magistrate; Douglass, while Shears was resisting ^ arrest. The constable had gone out 1 to arrest Shears on charges of shooting at his wife, assault and battery and evading the registration under the draft act. The testimony was all from negroes except that of the con, stable and that of D. J. Taylor, deputy sheriff, who accompanied the constable. Shears had been dodging for about a year and on Monday night the officers had information that he had returned and might probably be found at his wife's house. Shears was about 30 years of age. Mr. Wavirrt will hava no trouble in ob taining bail. < > m INFLUENZA CLOSES CITADEL. Students Dismissed Out of Precaution Against Disease. Charleston, S.
