rDEATH CLAIMS UNIT! I SENATORJ I Following Attack, Senioi ness" in Washington, at Trenton.?Succ< Benet, of Washington, July 3.?Senator Benjamin R. Tillman breathed his last at twenty minutes past four o'clock this morning, strong heart action carrying the span of life sev, erai hours longer than had seemed possible the evening before. There had been little hope since Saturday when the seriousness of the Senator's condition became apparent in the complete paralysis of his left side, and practically no hope at all after Sunday, when the paralysis extended to his whole body and he relapsed into a state of coma. Senator Tillman did not suffer in his last illness, and his passing from life was in strange contrast, its peacefulness, to his stormy career. Not all the members of the Senator's family were able to reach, his bedside before his death. As has been said, Capt. Henry Tillman is recovering from a slight operation r B. R. TILLMAN. Trenton, July 4.?All that is mortal of Senator Benjamin Ryan Tillman, for 24 ^ears a member of the upper house of congress from .South Carolina, was laid to rest in the village cemetery at his home town of Trenton today amidst a mammoth mound of floral offerings from friends in many parts of the country. Congressional Funeral Party. Immediately upon the announcement that the aged senator had died, the usual notices were sent to the house and the senate and special committees named to attend the funeral at Trenton. In the senate party there were Senators Smith, of South Carolina, Swanson, of Virginia, Nelson, of Minnesota, Pomerene, of Ohio, Fernald, of Maine, and Tranimell, of Florida. Among those senators who were detained at the last moment by official business and prevented from attending the funeral were Senators Lodge, of Massachusetts, Penrose, of Pennsylvania, and Gailinger, of New Hampshire. Mr. Lodge is the man who Senator Tillman asked many years ago to deliver the eulogy upon his death whenever it should occur, and this will be done at a later time. The house delegation consisted of all the members from South Carolina except Representatives Stevenson and Whaley, and the following from other States: Cannon, of Illinois, Walsh, of Massachusetts, Elliott, of Indiana, Morgan, of Oklahoma, Williams, of Illinois, and Padgett, of Tennessee. The train left Washington Wednesday afternoon at 7 o'clock and a quick run was made with these senators and house members aboard, and also with Col. Higgins, sergeant at arms of the senate, and Robert Gordon, holding the same position in the house in charge of the party, as well as J. M. Baker, secretary of the senate. At Rock Hill Dr. D. B. Johnson got aboard the train and in Columbia there were a number of others who made the trip to Trqpton. Among them J. Elmore Martin, of Charleston, Dr. J. W. Babcock, Dr. W. S. Currell, Dr. W. M. Riggs, and seveSral members of the board of directors of Clemson College. There was also Ex-Gov. Just before the funeral train reached Trenton the members of the South Carolina delegation got together and sent the following telegram to Josephus Daniels, secretary of the navy: "The members of the South Carolina delegation in the senate and house of representatives wish to express their appreciation of the honor conferred upon the State of South Carolina in naming a destroyer Tillman in honor of the deceased Senator Benjamin Ryan Tillman. We are conscious of the fact that heretofore the destroyers have been named only in honor of naval heroes but we feel with you this honor is rightfully conferred because of the loyal and effective services rendered by Senator Tillman, who like a hero, died working for the development of the navy (Continued on page 6, column 6.)
