Xo matter how poor you are, the people who are ministered 1 by the Red Cross?that angel of mercy?are yet poorer, or in worse circumstances. It is far better that we people in prosperous Bamberg county should cut oft one meal a day, or wear a raged suit, than refuse or neglect to contribute to the Red Cross. We do not believe much in selfcommendation, but we cannot refrain from expressing a pardonable priae in the attitude of the people of Bam-; berg county in the matter of gifts to the Red Cross war fund. The coun ty has so far surpassed the expectations of the authorities who made the allotments that we are compelled to accept as a certain fact that the peo- j pie a? a whole of this county are I standing as a solid unit in support of the government?for what is supporting the Red Cross but supporting the government? Reports from various sections of South Carolina indicate that the old Palmetto State is doing the same thing everywhere. It is a notable fact that this State has always stood foremost among the States of the union when big problems presented themselves, and she is again proving herself true to her best traditions. ! ^ ii ?
