It is generally agreed that there
has been no election year in many
moons in which so little interest has
been manifested in politics up to this
time. We take this to be a good
omen. The people have other things
to thing about. We take it to
mean, also, that flabbergast politicians
will not have much opportunity
to make an impression this year.

"lis ne passeront pas." That is a
French sentence everybody ought to
memorize and ever keep in mind. It
means "They shall not pass!" It
was first used at the battle of the
Marne, and the Germans did not pass.
When world democracy is established,
it should be borne in mind that it
was largely through the passing of
this sentence from French mouth to
mouth when it appeared that ho power
on earth at that time could keep
the Germans out of Paris. But they
did liot pass.

We hope the State Democratic convention
will vote this year to do
. away with the county-to-county canvass.
It failed of passage two years
ago, but it is $o be hoped that the
fight will he renewed. This is no
time to go into hysterics over politics.
These biennial farces do little
but arouse petty jealousies and factional
feeling, from which the State
is now completely free. We should
like to see the time when men may

gard to faction, and the doing away
' with the county-to-county canvass
will be a step nearer this desired
state of affairs.

Of course all this war finance is
, is beyond the average American. We
simply cannot comprehend the magnitude
of it. This is all the more
reason why we should subscribe to
bonds and buy stamps to the limit.
Don't stop with buying one bond or
\ a thousand dollars worth, if you can
get hold of more money. The big'
ness of the thing may be realized
from the statement that the $200,0005
(or thereabouts) subscribed in
bonds in this county will run the
whole war just 12 minutes. That
, is all that is expected of Bamberg!
in this loan drive, to run the war
just 12 minutes. And, if we can
double our allotment, we can make
the government a present of funds
enough to run it 12 minutes longer.
If every county would do this, financial
matters would not worry Washington.
ITie liberty bond campaign is now
drawing to a close. There remain
but a few days in which work can bp
done. Every committee, and each
v individial member of the committees,
is nrced to do their verv best during
the refining few days. Bamberg
county is already oversubcribed.
Let's double the allotment, if possible.
There.is plenty of money in
Bamberg county, and there is no
better investment in the world than
government bonds. When bonds become
valueless, nothing else will be
^ worth while. The county has already
done fine, and the people are to be
congratulated. It is one of the first
counties in the State to go over the
top. Now that we are over the top,
let's make the charge that spells
' victory. The farther the advance
we make in the liberty loan the farther
the boys can go after they have
, gone over the top. Let's not stop
until they are completely to Berlin.

here for a few days was invited to
take an automobile ride with a
friend. They were going through a
country road uf high speed, when a
traffic noliceman on the lookout for
speeders gave chase on his motorcycle.
He caught up with them and announced

"You're pinched for speeding."

the Irishman. "Begorra, wasn't yer
going as fast as us yourself?"?

Two per cent, of the enlisted personnel
of the divisions and detached
units of the regular army, national
guard and national army, excepting
the coast artillery and various staff
corps, will be designated to attend
the fourth series of officers' training
schools, which will open May 15. Admission.
has also been granted to
some men who have had at least one
year's military training under army
officers at educational institutions
which have earned government recognition.
Millions of dollars, it is estimated
by revenue officials, will be added
to the government funds in penalties
as a round-up of income tax delinquents
by the bureau of internal revenue.

cables: "A decree of April 5, published
April 6, gives notice that all
merchandise prohibited froili importation
by law of May 6, 1916, will be
seized and sold for profit of the State
unless a regular authorization be
presented within five days after arrival.
'For the first 30 days after
promulgation of this decree requests
for derogations from its provision
can be addressed to the minister of
finance in case particular circumstances
justify an exception."

Pusuant to the rules of the Democratic
party of South Caroina, the
president of each Democratic club in
Bamberg county is requested to call
a meeting of his club designating the
hour thereof, to be holden on Saturday,
April 27, 1918, for the purpose
of reorganizing and electing officers
for the ensuing term; and also to
elect a county executive committeeman
and delegates to the cnuntv con
vention, which is hereby called to
meet in the court house at Bamberg,
S. C., on Monday, May 6, 1918, at
noon.
"The convention shall be com,
posed of delegates elected from the
clubs in the county, one delegate ,f or
every 25 members, and one delegate
for a majority fraction thereof, based
upon the number of votes polled in
the first primary of the preceding
year."
Under this rule the several clubs
will be entitled to delegates as follows:
