ASKS COLLEGES TO HELP. ^
Urges Colleges to Close for Present,
Churches to Hold Union Services.
Anderson, Dec. 14.?Characterizing
the coal condition throughout South
Carolina as being "most acute, with
only fair chances of securing relief
until after the Christmas holidays," y
B. B. Gossett, State fuel administrator,
today called upon all colleges,
schools and other institutions of
learning, where wood cannot be substituted
for coal, to suspend during
the holidays for a period of not less
than two weeks, or longer if practi- ?
cable. He also called upon the
churches of the towns and cities
heated by coal to hold united services *
fnr the Dresent.
The action is taken by the administrator
for the purpose of conserving
the present small supply of
coal, and to bridge over the holidays
until more shipments of coal, for ^
South Carolina points can be secured.
He points out that very few shipments
of coal can be expected from j
the mines during the holiday season,
and says that it is imperative, in
prder to meet conditions squarely,
that every pound of coal be conserved
and distributed properly among t
the people to prevent suffering.
Gave Fair Warning.
Several weeks ago realizing that
conditions in the State were bad,
and that they were going to become d
even more acute, Mr. Gossett sounded ^
a warning, suggesting the substitution
of wood for coal as far as possi- ^
ble. Many communities heeded this
warning by laying in supplies of
wood, sufficiently large to tide their ^
people through the extremely cold
weather. Other communities, how- ^
ever, did not heed the warning and
deluged the fuel administration with ,
urgent icqucais tui iin meuits.it: amy- ^
|p~. ments of coal. '
-Mr. Gossett has requested tele- j
graphic reports from city fuel commissions
on the supply of coal on
hand and on the road and estimates .
on coal needed during the holiday
period. He wants this information in b
hand by tomorrow noon. On Sunday
he leaves for Washington to confer
with Dr. Garfield, the national administrator,
on Monday, hoping to
secure shipments of coal for South ^
? Carolina points at once. .
Shortage National. P
Mr. Gossett states that he cannot _
too strongly emphasize the fact that
i the present coal shortage is not
1
I confined to this State, but that it is
/nation-wide, and the people must adjust
themselves to .the fact that
America is engaged in a great war,
which will necessitate some sacrifices
on their part, not the least of which
is the matter of curtailing the use
of coal. He laid great stress on the
fact that it is the patriotic duty of
every loyal South Carolinian to assist
his country in this way and that
no one had the right to expect to go
through this winter without suffering
some discomforts and inconveniences.
Unlike many other States, South
Carolina has an abundant supply of
wood available, therefore, it is not
only a necessity, but the duty of the
people to substitute wood for coal in
every way possible.

"For many years I have wondered
f the time would ever come when I
ould sit down to a meal and eat

aid Mrs. W. L. Garvin, wife of a

lunter St., Atlanta, Ga.
"No matter how careful I was
bout dieting myself, just as soon as
finished eating I was all upset and
ick, nothing seemed to agree with
ie.
"Of course," said Mrs. Garvin, my
wful run-down condition was due tc
he fact Jthat for many years I had
uffered something awful from serius

rould be tortured with inflamatory
heumatism. In fact, I was so runown
and generally 'done up' that I
ust about had nervous prostration.
"How am I now? Why, man, I can
ust eat anything in the world my
ppetite calls for; and that is just
bout everything on the menu since 1
egan taking Vitona. All those awul
pains in my back and sides have
isappeared.
"I don't know what it is to have
rouble with my kidneys any more.
Tv friends are all asking what is
ausing me to gain flesh so fast and
simply say one word, VITONA."
When a representative of Vitona
sked Mrs. Garvin for a statement
he quietly replied: "Go your limit,
on, I am not much on this publicity
usiness, but if I can help thousands
f others who are suffering as I did,
will gladly tell them what Vitona
as done' for me." .
