Italians at several points on Italian soil, the combined enemy lorces have i pushed forward on the Italian left wing and captured Cividale, lying to' the northeast of Udine, and are near- j ing the plains beyond. In addition, J the Austrian tow n of Gorizia, a point j of great strategic volue on the Isonzo river has been retaken from the Italians. According to the latest Berlin official communication, 100,000 Italians have been made prisoners and in excess r of 700 guns have fallen into Austro-German hands. The second and third Italian armies are declared to be in retreat. Rome Charges Cowardice. Rome admits that the falling back of the second army, asserting that cowardice, similar to that shown by the Russians in Galicia, was exhibit-j ed in the face of the foe, the Italians surrendering or retreating without giving battle, permitting the breaking of the left wing and thereby offering easy access to the town of Cividale. Prior to falling back, however, the Italians destroyed all their | depots and stores and Cividale was; on fire when tfie Austro-Germans entered it. Possibly the Italians in tins re-1 gion, who are declared by Rome to be retreating to prepared positions on the plains, will turn about and meet the enemy in open country fighting. If they do not and the enemy is able to keep up westward the fast face that has been maintained since t; e commencement of the o;eration, the greater part of the Italian orces along the northeastern line, will be threatened with capture. The situation is so grave that a special meeting of the French Cabinet fcas been ted for the purpose of deciding upon the question of the ailed coopera-| tion 'on the Italian front. Buenos Aires, Oct. 28.?A sedation has been occasioned here by the1 jullication of a dispatch from Rio Janiero asserting that the Brazilian foreign minister has made known that translation of dispatches sent byi Count von Luxburg, through the me-i nf the Swedish legation while the count was German minister to Argentina, has revealed a project for | a, Gern an invason o Southern Brazil. The newspaiers here demand that; the government publish the Luxburg publication by a foreign government. (The dispatches were sent to Washington for translation and the "foreign government" evidently is the United States.) The Argentine Government is being criticised for its siience. CJemson College, Oct. 25.?The Mexican boll weevil, the coming of which has been so much dreaded by the cotton planters of South Carolina since it first began to destroy the crops in the Southwest several years ago, has at last reached the State and is now established on D'aufusky Island, in the Savannah river. For the last year or two the weevil has been at work in the cotton fields of Georgia and it was anticipated that it w^ould enter Beaufort county, according to ananouncemnt made this afternoon by A. F. Conradi, State entomologist. Mr. Conradi says there is absolutely no doubt of the presence of the weevil in South Carolina and that the farmers might as well begin to take steps to combat the ravages of the most disastrous insect which has yet invaded the cotton fields of the South.
