TRAGEDY IN FLORENCE.
J. R. Guliedge Dies From Five Bullets
. Fired Into His Body.
Florence. Sept. 21.?J. R. Gulledge,
of Wadesboro. X. C., was shot
to death on the streets of Florence
this afternoon by S. Jess Kennedy, of
this place. Kennedy was immediately
arrested and is now in prison.
The shooting took place at or near
the corner of East Evans and Harlee
streets, one of the main thoroughfares
of the city, about 6 o'clock, and
was witnessed by a number of pedestrians
and others.
From what can be gathered other
than what was stated by witnesses
before the coroner's jury it seems
that bad blood existed between the

an alleged domestic trouble, and that
a shooting scrape was only averted
some days ago by cooler heads and
friends. However, the two men met
this afternoon and the shooting resulted.
Kennedy fired five shots from
a 32-calibre Smith & Wesson pistol,
each ball taking effect in Gulledge's
body.

When Chief of Police Brunson arrived
He found in Gulledge's hand a
32-caliber Smith & Wesson "sidewheeler,"
but it had never been
fired.
Gulledge was a flagman on the Atlantic
Coast Line, running between
Florenc? and Wadesboro, N. C., and
was about twenty-five years old. He
was a Mason and a Shriner. Kennedy
is a flagman on the same system,
running on passenger trains between
Florence, Charleston, and Savannah.
. The coroner's jury rendered a verdict
about 9 o'clock tonight to the
effect that Gulledge "came to his

hands of S. J. Kennedy."
Gulledge's -body was taken in
charge of by Vaughn's undertaking
establishment and is awaiting disposition
instructions from his family.
Julledge was unmarried.
CARBONIZING COAL
Qas Too Valuable as Fuel to Burn
Fuel Mineral.
So desirable is gas as a fuel and so
valuable are the by-products of its
manufacture, that gas engineers of
Birmingham, England, declare that it
pays to' carbonize coal instead of I
burning it. They foresee that town
gas in future will be in demand chiefly
as a substitute for solid fuel, and
point out that already nearly 80 per
cent, of the gas made in Birmingham?amounting
last year to 11,000,000,000
cubic feet?is used for heating
and power purposes, domestic and
industrial. Even where the heating

efficiency of gas is no greater than
that of solid fuel, other economics
give gas the advantage, while the improved
efficiency of gas furnaces wil
soon enable gas to compete on the
fuel cost basis alone. The use of
| gas furnaces in Birmingham's metallurgical
industries has greatly developed
in the last two years. In
annealing brass stampings the work
is now done twice as rapidly as when
solid fuel was used, and in the case of
iron castings the product is superior.
The greatly improved briquettes
from the gas making residue give an
almost blameless incandescence in
the open domestic grate.
