There are a great many worse things than tobacco to che>v. good friend. Take the rag, for instance. * * ? # # :S Bamberg Herald: "The amount of whiskey being shipped into Bamberg is on the steady increase." An advertisement or complaint??The Columbia State. ? Does not the law say if a person be sick, he should have a little alco holic stimulant? Naturally we regret the health of the community is not so good at the present writing, but, doubteless, with the increase in whiskey shipments the quarts ought to restore the town to its usual good health. * *. * * * * 1 Here is a striking paragraph written by Mr. Ambassador Gerard: During this period I had constant conversations with von Jagow and Zimmermann, and it was during the period of conversations about this submarine warfare that Zimmermann _ on one occasion said to me: "The United States does not dare to do anything against Germany, because we have 500,000 German reservists in America, who will rise in arms against your government if your government should dare to take any action against Germany. As he said this he had worked himself up to a passion and repeatedly struck the table with his fist. The ambassador's reply was that there is a lamp pc*st in America for every reservist who is disloyal to tills country. .****#? At this season of the year fires are frequent. Every precaution should he taken. Here is a suggestion from the State insurance department that is worthy of note: "Help to reduce the shingle roof fires by advising the people at this season of the year that they should put a piece of old sheet zinc or an old discarded dry cell battery in their fire places and stoves. The fumes from this will rid the chimney of soot and save money and houses. "Help prevent fires by urging people to rid their cellars, garrets and premises of trash. Have no greasyrags about the house to start spontaneous combustion fires. Do not put ashes of any kind in wooden boxes. Replace weathered shingles with tin or some non-combustible roof and see .that tneir electrical wiriag has not the insulation worn off and is in good order. "Help save the property of the people. This may not reduce insurance rates, but it will save loss to many citizens." * ^ ; ' . T A SINGING ORGAN. i *. r Inventor Says His New Instrument Will Recite li/ Words. An organ recital a few years from now will be actually a recital of words, besides music. And the organ will do it all. " For the last ten years Prof. Daytdfc C. Miller has been at work inventing an organ which will actually sing words. He has already formed combinations of pipes to speak the vowels and to say "mapima" and "papa." "I have only to perfect the instrument to say some simple sentence," says Dr. Miller. "Then the problem ?of having an orchestra and chorus in one?will be solved." Dr. Miller has invented one complicated machine he calls th^phonedeik, and a number of otflers, all helping him toward the invention of the speaking organ. To make the organ speak Dr. Miller says he had to analyze the simplest sound first into its component parts. And to do this he had to see the sounds. Hearing them wouldn't do. fin Ho invontPfl thp nhonedeik. which shows you, in black and white, the sound you .speak into it. The writing is in cross strokes of various shapes, each sound having a different stroke, which Dr. Miller calls a "curve." Dr. Miller photographs these . strokes, runs them through a machine that analyzes them into their simplest parts, puts them on qontheir complicated instrument that checks up the analysis, builds his organ pipes to correspond with the mathematical calculations and produces a sound from the organ like that spokep into the phonedeik.?Fargo Courier-Xews. IX HOMBURG DURING RAID. ' Emperor Was Making Famous German Resort Headquarters. "Many English travelers win read with deep personal interest the news of the bombardment by allied aviators of Homburg-vor-der-Hohe, the fashionable little watering place 12 lailes-by rail northwest of Frankforton-the-Main," says a war geography bulletin issued by the National Geographic society on the Prussian town which is reported to have been raided by airplanes at a time when the kaiser was making his headquarters there a few days ago. "Before the war Homburg, which had a population of 14,000, was vis ited each season by that number of! travelers and health seekers. Fully a third of the visitors each year were Englishmen, and its baths rivaled Biarritz in the favor of the late King Edward VII as a resort. "Homburg is delightfully situated amid the spurs of the Taunsus mountains, and the bathing establishments are most elaborate and commodious. The springs attracted many who suffered from rheumatism, indigestion and skin diseases. "For more than two centuries Homburg was the capital and favorite place of residence af the landgraves of Hesse-Homburg. The great schloss was built by Frederick II in 16S0-S"), and was refitted in IS66 as a palace for the royal family of Prussia when the town passed into the possession of that kingdom.
