AMERICA'S GUNS IN FRANCE
ARTILLERY CONTINGENT ARRIVED
Abundance of Sliells Supplied for
First Time and Sammies Make
Practice Ground Thunder.
American guns are booming in |
France, booming under the eyes of j
observation balloons with airplanes
to trace each singing sharpnel shell,
each missile of high explosive destructiveness.
Thus far the guns I
have not been turned against the;
enemy, but there is every likelihood i
that the artillery will beat the in-j
fantry to the front, for it is planned!
to complete intensive training of the 1
gunners under actual battle condi-j
tions, under the tire of German guns;
and with their own weapons directed!
against occupied German trenches in
various positions behind the enemy;
lines.
While the plans of the American;
commanders, are unknown, it would
I
seem logical from a military stand- i
point, that after the artillery has;
completed several weeks of train-;
ing at the front in liason with the:
French infantry and supporting guns,:
the greater part of it would be withdrawn
for maneuvers with the gradu-j
ally multiplying American infantry.

The cooperation of artillery and i
infantry is so close under modernj
battle tactics that it is essential theyj
should be trained to act together al-|
most as one unit. And just as the
first contingent of American infantry
will devote itself largely through the
fall and winter to training other units
as they arrive, so the first contingent
of artillery will train the batteries,
regiments and brigades which will be
thrown into force before the spring
campaign of 191$ is likely to begin.

servation posts and in the schools of
instruction French officers sit nowonly
in an advisory character.
What the American artillery now
has and never had before is plenty of
shells. It is easily conceived what
this means to encourage officers and
men whose batteries explode in two
or three weeks ten times the number
of shells formerly allotted to
them for an entire year.
Modern artillery training is a maze
of technical details.
Use Famous Seventy-Fives.
In beginning the fulfillment of its
contract with Washington, the French
government has supplied the American
artillery units with the latest output
of the famous seventy-fives,
which it is generally conceded is the
finest light field artillery piece the
world has ever known. It corresponds
with and takes the place of old
three-inch guns in the American
army. The French have also supplied
the Americans with six-inch howitzers?a
gun which corresponds
with the noted German 5.9, probably
the most effective weapon in the en
tire uerman gun usl.
The Americans have been quick
to master the details of the French
weapons and are handling them as if
they had been friends of many years
standing. Under the watchful supervision
of a splendid old French major,
who speaks English as if it
were his own tongue, they have taken
down and reassembled the two
types of guns with which they have
been training, so that the most minj
ute detail of construction and the
i particular use of each part has bei
come throughly known,
i The work of cooperation with bali
loons and airplanes has only rej
cently been started. The airplanes
! have attracted many of the brightest
! young officers in the artillery, who
; are practicing to qualify as observers.
The American chief of artillery in
! France gave each officer of the lower
grades an opportunity to indicate
cnprinl hranoll
uia picicn-uvt 1.1
of artillery work. It is striking evi;
denee of the spirit of the expeditionary
force that an overwhelming
majority expressed the desire to become
airplane observers.
\V: nniorfnl Stability.
The French artillery planes, which
are being used for training purposes
have twin engines and great wide:
spreading wing< giving them wonderful
stability. The trip which the
I correspondent made in one of these
over the artillery camp and school
revealed a wide sweeping range ol

Selling Medicine in
State.
The Vitona agency for Bamberg
has been awarded Mack's Drug Store,
and the people of this city may now
j enjoy the benefits of this great disI
covery.
Vitona was placed on sale in Columbia
about three weeks ago, and
many remarkable statements are now
being made by people of that city
| who have been restored to" health
! by its use after every other medij
cine and treatment had failed.
| The fact that over three thousand
j bottles of the preparation were sold
by Columbia dealers alone in ten
days after its introduction there is
ample evidence of the popularity Vitona
is enjoying. It is now said to be
the largest selling preparation han- ,
die*! by South Carolina druggists and
dealers, and the demand foi* it is i
steadily increasing.
Vitona is not to be classed with
s
the average proprietary medicines,
which are in many cases nothing
more nor less than medicated alcohol,
which stimulates and does not
give lasting relief. Vitona is more
beautiful hills and valleys.
The American ranges teem with
!j most of tlie sights and sounds of actual
battle, while officers and men
work with an earnestness and zeal
" which could not be surpassed on the
: firing* line itself.
Scores of German employees used
about the camp 011 various construction
work are getting a striking first
1 hand impression of what American
. participation in the war may yet mean
to their country.

In every lot of hogs on feed two or

The hog that fattens easily must
