.Mr. Hooton came over here to make
an investigation of the damage that
the boll weevil has done this section.
He did not come with the party of
South Carolinians that have been
booked as coming to this city, but
came on his own account, to make a
quiet investigation pf conditions.
He says that the crop of cotton and
corn in his section is fine and the boll
weevil has not yet reached his county,
but, like a wise man who foresees
evil, he wanted to come out here and
see with his own eyes the best way
to combat the pest when they do
make their appearance in his part
of the South.
Hon. J. A. Wade, commissioner of
agriculture, took him in hand and

The Red Cross Chapter.
The Bamberg county chapter of the
Red Cross is going right ahead in its
Tt-rtT-lr r?f nr?rj?ni7.in? t.hfi HPODlft of the
community in this worthy enterprise,
and the officers say that they wish
everyone in the county to become a
member. Now that our nation's armies
are being trained, and will
probably be on the firing line before
long, it is especially important that
the noble work of the Red Cross be
pushed forward. A work-room has
been secured in Bamberg, in the
town hall, and it is open for workers
on every Tuesday and Thursday
from nine to noon and from four to
six in the afternoon. New branches
have been organized in Denmark,
with about 45 members, at Kearse,
with 36 members, and at Ehrhardt,
with about 45 members. Real interest
is sh,own in the work, and it
is hoped soon that all of the branches
will be in full operation. Twentyfive
comfort bags have been completed
by the chapter, with the exception
of the buttons, which will have to be
ordered, as the demand for these
seems to exceed the supply. It is
confidently believed that the Bamberg
county chapter, with its branches,
will soon be doing a great work
in furnishing stipplies.

MB. 1). B. MATH EN" V DEAD.
Passed Away Sunday Morning Following
Long Illness.
.Mr. D. R. Matheny, a prominent
j citizen of Bamberg, died at his home
^ in this city Monday morning after an
illness of many months. While Mr,
Matheny had been a sufferer for
months with other complications, his
death was due directly to heart failure.
Mrs. Matheny went into the
room of her husband Sunday morning,
after an absence of a short time,
and found him dead in bed.
The remains were interred at the
old family burial ground near Blackville
.Monday morning, the funeral
services being conducted by Rev. J.
J). Huggins, pastor of the Denmark
Baptist church. A large congregation
ofxfriends and relatives of the
deceased was present at the funeral
*
to pay the last sad rites to the deceased.
Daniel Rush Matheny was born in
Barnwell county 63 years ago. He
had lived in this section all of his
life, moving to Bamberg about 15
years ago. He was an unostensible
man, but one of the town's best and
most substantial citizens. He was
married to Miss Fcstina Hair, of
Blackville, who survives him. The
following children survive him: J.
P. Matheny, of Ridgeville; Otis Matheny,
of Durham, X. C.; Raymond
Matheny, of Greenville; Paul Matheny
and Miss Mary Matheny, of
Bamberg. .
Mr. Matheny is also survived by
two brothers, Sim Matheny, of Charleston,
and John Matheny, of Holly
Hill, and one sister, Mrs. J. P. O'Xeal,
of Illinois.
Mr. Matheny was a member of the
Bamberg Baptist church, and was
prominently identified with the work
of the church.
NEGRO PREACHER LYNCHED.
, Beaten and Shot to Death hy Crowd
of lk>th Races. s
York, Aug. 23.?The Rev. W. T.
Sims, colored, pastor of St. John's
f
Baptist church, near Sharon, eight
miles west of here, was taken from
hfe bed at an early hour this mornin
and beaten and shot to death. A mob
of negroes and white men numbering
approximately thirty, did the deed. .
The negro preacher was spending
the night at the home of Bob Burris,
a member of his congregation, when
he was pulled from his bed, his night
clothes were taken off and he was
dragged down the road a half mile,
1 his assailants beating and cutting him
all the while. He died from a bullet
wound in his hip. His bruises would
have killed him.
No motive for the crime can be dis90vered.
Sims had trouble some time
ago with some members of his church,
! but so far as the sheriff's investigation
had extended he had done \white
1 people no harm. Fred Penninger, a
' welji known young white man of Sharon,
and Frank Twitty, colored, are in
1 jail, charged with being parties to
the crime. Witnesses at the inquest
' testified that, Dick Norman, a promi1
nenf whitp man livine near the scene
1 of the killing, was involved. He had
' not been arrested tonight. There is
' considerable indignation among both
whites and negroes over the crime.
It is said the negro had used strong
language against the draft, and in
opposition to the war, and this is
given as a probable "reason for his
1 being summarily dealt with.
. BAMBERG TO FURNISH XIXE.
. Five Per Cent, of Quota Will Entci
Service September o.
The local board for Bamberg county
has received orders to prepare five
per cent, of Bamberg county's quota
in the first draft to report for service

' vice on this date, but on account ol
' the uncompleted condition of the can
tonment at Columbia and congested
transportation facilities, it was de,
cided to call only five per cent, al
this time.
Forty per cent, of the county's
rturvfo will ho railed into service or
J September 19th; 40 per cent, will be
called on October 3rd and the remain
