THEY OUGHT TO BE HUNG
SAYS SAM NIC MOLLS OF NATION'S
TRAITORS.
Congressman Stands Square to tlie
Colors.?Those U lio Co Aoout
Criticising Are Traitors.
Union, Aug. IS.?Speaking at a patriotic
mass meeting today Representative
Samuel J. Xicholls, member of
the House committee on military affairs,
said that traitor is the appropriate
word to apply to those who are
going about the country criticising
the government's war policy, and that
the people who are doing this ought
to be hung.
"Those who consider the war in
the abstract," he said, "or that it is
not associated with the nation's full
purpose to maintain American rights,
are not with us."
This was Union county's second patriotic
meeting and parade and the
outpouring of the people of the county
was all that could be desired. The
meeting was held in the city park and
was presided over by the Hon. L. J.
Browning, chairman of the county defense
committee, by whom the meeting
was called. The speakers were
David R. Coker, chairman of the State
defense committee: Dr. H. X. Sny-!
der, of Wofford college, and the Hon.
Sam J. Nicholls, representative in
cortgress for the fourth district, who
spoke in the order named.
Mr. Coker delivered an excellent
address and made a most favorable
impression. Dr. Snyder's address was
the best that has been delivered here
since the beginning of the war. He
indicted the German government and
people for lack of international honor,
for inhumanity and for ruthless disregard
for the rights of others. In j
words of great earnestness and eloquence
he drove home to his hearers
that this country is engaged in a war
for the protection of human rights
the world over. It is a speech that
should be delivered throughout the
length and breadth of the land provided
Dr. Snyder himself could deliver
it.
Mr. Nicholls gave-an account of the
proceedings in congress during the
days immediately preceding the declaration
that a state of war existed
between this country and Germany,
told of the patient efforts of the Presdent
to keep this nation out of war,
and declared that those who were going
about the country criticising the
administration for declaring war were
traitors and ought to be hung.
This statement on the part of Mr.
Xicholls, whose former adherence to
the Blease faction is well known, is
regarded as very significant and caused
much favorable comment.' His
manly stand and declaration had
great weigkt and brought hearty applause
from his hearers.
Hocfs $10.75 Per U>0 Pounds.
Chicago, Aug. 20.?Hog prices
which have risen every day since
July 21, reached a new high record!
today when they soared to $19.75 per
100 pounds. On August 1, 1914,
hogs sold for $8.90.

local examination board for army
service at Elloree from Branchville,

The people of Branchville are interested
in the location of the new roads
to be constructed under the State
highway law. Branchvile by its fa
vorable location originally planned to
have roads crossing from Charleston
to Augusta, and from Columbia
to Savannah. An effort is being made
to change the natural location of
these roads. The people of Bamberg
want the road from Columbia to
Savannah to pass through their town
and also want road from Augusta to
Charleston to pass through the
territory^ 'south of Branchville for
advantageous commercial facilities
for Bamberg. It seems that one road
has been settled and that is one that
passes Orangeburg to Charleston via
Branchville.
The first bale of cotton ginned in
this section of the State was ginned
here Wednesday by Peter Bvrd for
Frank E. Dukes. Other farmers are
getting out cotton for tlie market in j
a few days.
The prospects for a bountiful liarvest
through this section of the State j
seems good. More fruit and vegeta-!
bles have been canned than ever be- j
fore. Everybody is looking out for!
something to eat this winter. Gardens j
have been given considerable more j
attention than former years.
