tlTfje pamfcerg ^eralb ESTABLISHED APHIL, 1891. Thursday, August 2,1917. | The merchants of Bamberg have' had a record-breaking sale of fruit jars. Never before has there been so much can goods put up at home. The president of the United States is certainly a wizard of words. The notes he sent to Denman and Goethals are masterpieces. Mr. Wilson has a nice way of doing everything he goes at. He no doubt made these gentlemen, who had been at loggerheads with one another, leel that they were doing a patriotic stunt by retiring instead of being kicked out. It is quite evident that this war is a serious business with the president, and he does not intend for the war measures to be trifled with. Nobody can tell whether Russia will ever be able to pull itself together or not, but, according to our opin[ ion, the Russian revolution has deirainnpri in Kerensky the strongest man that nation has ever put to the front. Revolutions are hard things to handle, and it is possible that no living man can keep Russia together at this time, but if there is a man in Russia equal to the occasion, we believe that Kerensky is that man. The government has made many requests of The Herald, in common with all other newspapers. Many of ! these requests it has been "impossible ! for us to comply with. We have en! deavored to give all publicity possi| ble to matters concerning the draft, i as it appears to us that the dratt most | vitally affects the people. Through the counsel of defense we have also been asked to contribute some job printing to the food conservation campaign. As we have already contributed so much space, time and work to various government purposes. we did not feel that it was unreasonable to decline to make a contribution form our job department. The government does not own any newspapers and it, therefore, cannot furnish its own newspaper publicity, but it does own the biggest job printing establishment in the world. Th? government printing office has time and money with which to print' free of charge, hundreds of long-winded speeches, many of them actually against the government itself, for free distribution in franked envelopes. long as the government does that/, we think it is quite unreasonable to ask country printers to furnish it with printed matter? especially in view of the fact that the government printing office is thej country printer's worst competitor in; some lines. tDPKiR REPORE BOARD IV rui a >age 1, column 6) I ed) 1744 ) 1112! ed) ? 345 1595 ) 1355 j vhite) 103 | 15851 ored) 12211 white) ,...1102 I ) : 1625 j ) 556 ) 1565 red) 154 ;... 1281 ite) .'. 51 lored) 717 ored) 1057 ite) 1256 red) : 1073 !.
