%\je pambergileralb ESTABLISHKI) APRIL. 1891. Thursday, June 28, 1917. We don't like to make excuses, but it is a mere statement of fact to say that we are still working under ex-j treme difficulty in The Herald office. j The cement contractor, Mr. Nichols, completed his work all right, and The Herald now has a fine concrete floor, but we are pretty badly crippled. Our office, being modern!}* equipped, is supplied with individual motors. We have six of them. Two )f them refuse to "go:" one press is broken so badly that it will pprobablv have to be replaced by a new one: another press is "charged" so strongly with electricity that it is not safe to operate it, and it is impossible to operate the linotype at night (unless the operator is thoroughly "insulated") because this machine, while operated j by city current, is also charged up. But we hope to have everything straightened out soon, and we will J get down to regular work once more. Everybody admires a game loser. The following letter appeared in the Charleston American a few days ago, over the signature of "John Richardson," who pleases to style himself an "old time Bleaseite." The letter is addressed to "Cole L. Blease, Esq., chairman, Columbia, S. C.:" Dear Sir:?I am a "reformer." You have been our "standard bearer," but I must say I am greatly surprised at your protesting Governor Manning's appointments for selective committee. When you were governor of South Carolina, your "slogan" was "none need apply for office or appointment except he be a Bleaseite." Yon stated time and again on stump and in papers that "only Bleaseites would be recognized and "d " those who opposed you. Now the shoe is on the other foot and you are raising h because Governor Manning has appointed his friends and only a few Bleaseites. "Small favors thankfully received." I am ashamed of you, "Coley." I am *with you, and for God's sake be a man. Don't whine?you can't always be the "boss." I am afraid Brother Grace is leading you into treacherous paths. We made the fight?we lost?so take your licking like a man and wait till you "catch 'em" right. The Aiken Journal and Review in its last issue contained an item of news that is likely to be misleading. It is headed "Aiken County Leads the State," and states that the Aiken recruiting office has won the blue ribbon for securing the largest number of recruits. It may be true, and doubtless is, that the Aiken recruiting office has secured the largest proportionate number of recruits, but the recruits must not have come from Aiken county, for, according to a statement given out by the government for enlistments during the period of April 1 to June 13, Aiken county recruits numbered 17 out of an allotment of 84. Bamberg coun ty recruits numbered 15 out of an allotment of 3S?thus leading Aiken county by long odds. In fact, Bamberg county outnumbered all counties in the Aiken sub-district, in which Bamberg county is placed, as the following figures will show: Required Obtained Barnwell 68 6 Bamberg 38 15 Edgefield 56 3 Orangeburg 112 10 Aiken S4 17 Saluda 42 7 The Aiken recruiting office may lead the State, but Aiken county does not, according to the official figures. The Height of Precaution. "I never saw a man so afraid oi catching cold as Tompkins is." "Is he, really?" "I should say so. Why I've heard that whenever he takes a bath he stops up all the holes in the sponge for fear of draught."?Chicago Herald. RILEY & COPELAND Successors to "W. P. Riley.
