Thursday, June 7, 1917,
In its issue of June 4 the Charleston
American contained an article in
which it was stated that the two regiments
of national guard in this
State were short 1,023 men: in other
words the two regiments contain only
1.724 men, just a little over half
as many as required. On the same
page of the same paper of the same
issue there appeared another article
severely criticising Governor Manning
for not allowing a third regiment
to be organized. Which goes to show
what sort of arguments are resorted
to by the "reformers." Almost as
many men are needed to fill the ranks
of the two exisiting units as would
be required to form a new regiment.
The Herald is printed this week
under some difficulty. The floor of
The Herald building has been giving
away for some time, and Monday Contractor
Nichols began the work of replacing
the wooden floor with concrete.
This necessitates the moving
of the machinery to one sMe of the
building, putting down the floor on
the vacant side, and then moving
back and doing the other side. All
of which confuses the office pretty
thoroughly. The Book Store has had
to practically suspend business for a
few days, but, of course, The Herald
will be printed as usual, although it
may perhaps be abbreviated this
week and next. With a new concrete
floor, we do not anticipate any further
, floor troubles. We trust our friends
I
will overlook all our shortcomings
this week and next week, after which
we promise the same good newspaper
they are accustomed to receive every
week.
