Tlie town election will be held on
May first. We trust the voters of the
town will not forget to register for
this election. The registration books
will be open until the 23rd of April.
It is said that 50,000 tin cans were
collected in Orangeburg during
clean-up week 'by offering a moving
picture ticket for every twenty cans
collected. This would be a good
thing for Bamberg. Old tin cans are;
a menace to the health of the town,
and could easily be collected and dis-:
posed of in this manner, and if nobody
else will pay for the moving pic
- ture tickets, it would be a good in-1
vestment for city council to make.
After tomorrow, March 16th, it
will not be lawful for any newspaper j
published in South Carolina to carry |
any advertisement of liquor or any!
alcoholic beverage. It can be said;
to the credit of South Carolina jour-!
nalism that very few newspapers;
have for some years carried liquor I
advertising. This newspaper has not
considered whiskey advertising desirable,
and, with the exception of
perhaps a half dozen publications,
we believe this view has been shared
by all the other newspapers of the
State.
During the past year many beauti-J
ful residences have been erected in \
Bamberg, and we are glad to notice,
this activity in the city. We should j
now like to see some modest but
modern cottages erected for families |
who are not fortunate enough to own'
their own homes. There are a number
of families in town now who cannot
rent suitable houses, and doubtless
many families are prevented
from locating in Bamberg on account
of the scarcity of houses. We sug-'
gest that the Chamber of Commerce!
take up this matter and try to induce j
some of our local capitalists to in-'
vest some money in houses for the
good of the town.
Four Camden banks have bought
a half page space in the Camden
Chronicle for eight weeks. These
banks are using this space to inform
the farmers of food conditions
throughout the country, and to urge!
them to raise their own supplies atj
home. tThis is a novel move, and a j
very commendable one. All news-i
papers are willing and anxious, of'
course, to be: of service to the farm-1
ers as well as everybody else, but the;
banks realize that the newspaper!
men have to live as well as the farmers.
If the banks can use this space :
to help the farmers to become more:
prosperous, the farmers, in turn, will i
help the banks and make them more i
prosperous. While it i<= a business;
proposition with the banks, it is a:
movement that tends to make the!
country around Camden better, and
we believe that the farmers will not
only appreciate this effort, but that
many of them will accept the suggestions
and seek to profit thereby.
