Shr Uamhrrg f|?ralii ESTABLISHKl) APRIL. 1891. Thursday, Nov. 30, 1916. Greenwood is coming. One of her banks reports over a million dollars 011 deposit. The New York American prints a page article warning the American people against the perils of foolish policies, and says that it is time for the State department to rise to the level of sensibie policies. But the trouble is. friend, the American people have just said that the aforesaid policies are not foolish; they have also said that it is unnecessary for the State department to take a fight ' ? ' 1 nnlirMPs up to IIIO lO V tfl U1 ocuoiuiv ^, for the department is already up there. The Standard every week advises its readers to trade with the home merchant. We wonder how often the local merchants aavise their customers to take the home paper.?Saluda Standard. This is a good point. There are several small towns in this State which have excellent newspapers, papers which would be a credit to towns much larger. Saluda is such a town. The Standard is one of the best and neatest printed papers in the State, and the people of Saluda should give it good support. The Herald continually preaches "trade at home," and we mean it. In justice to the merchants of Bamberg we will say there are not many of them who do not give The Herald excellent support. And . we will say further that Bamberg is one of the best advertising towns we know of for its size. The splendid patronage given this newspaper nas enabled it to equip and maintain a printing shop that is not excelled in any town twice Bamberg's size in the State. Of course, there are- some, who like the people who insist on buying their clothing and other things from Chicago mail order houses, will insist on giving whatever printing patronage they command to out-of-town concerns in an effort to save a few cents perhaps. But, then, all towns have that to contend with. The merchants of this town, better than perhaps anybody else", know how much business goes elsewhere- It is doubtless true that mail order houses sell a suit of j clothes cheaper than our home merchants, but when it rips or tears or "busts," they can't cuss o;it the mail order man. They grin and bear it. We guess it is pretty much the same with printing. But there are just lots of people in town who know good printing when they see it and srood values when thev see them. so. all in all, we are proud of our town. And some day we are going to be the biggest town in this section of the State. Watch it. ACTS IN AIKEN COUNTY CASE. ?? Governor Orders Susi>en$ion of Magist trate Baker, of Langley. Columbia, Nov. 28.?Governor Manning late this afternoon issued an order suspending Magistrate W. E. Baker, of Langley, Aiken county, from office. During July a number of complaints and affidavits were filed with Governor Manning alleging that / Magistrate Baker was guilty of improper conduct, and the governor granted a hearing to all parties on July 31, at which hearing Magistrate Baker was represented and denied the charges. After hearing the testi' mony and investigating the matter the governor announced that he would reserve his decision until later. The governor decided that the magistrate was guilty or misconduct and the order of suspension issued today disposes of the matter until the legislature meets, when under the law the governor must report the suspension together with his reasons for same to the senate for confirmation. Since a suspension does not create a vacancy, the governor will not appoint a successor until the senate vhas acted on the matter. ?Mr. W. C. Patrick returned from the Baker hospital, Charleston, Sunday, and his many friends were delighted to see him on the streets again Monday. He is now rapidly recuperating.
