I Statement by Bureau.
In a statement reviewiVg the acreage
and the condition of the crops
the department of agriculture's bu3
reau of crop estimates said:
1 "Acreage: There has been a gen1
eral increase in the acreage planted
to cotton over the entire belt. There
? is a decided increase in the northern
* portion of the belt west of the Missis*
sippi river and the States of Louisiana
and Mississippi. These States,
- long boll weevil strongholds, are
^ gradually recovering their acreage.
- Several hundred thousand acres in
South Texas will produce no cotton
, this year on account of extreme
3 drought, which has lasted for more
- thah six months. The heavy producing
Mississippi river bottom lands
1 (both sides) has a heavy increase,
partly accounted for by new lands
r going into cultivation. Alabama and
Florida ,are suffering from 'weevil
panic' and there is not much increase
in the acreage in the infested territory.
In Georgia and the Carolinas
? there is a substantial increase. Cotton
is the main money crop of the
' South. The staple and seed are
3 bringing high prices, and this has
* encouraged farmers all over the cot1
ton belt to increase their acreage
substantially over last year.
Condition of Crop.
"Condition: Chief complaints this
* month are boll weevil and wet wreath*
er. Weevils are numerous over much
of the cotton area or Texas, touisi1
ana, Mississippi and Alabama, and
- in a smaller area of Arkansas and
d Georgia. In sections where there has
- been too much rain in the weevil-infested
area the prospect is for seri1
ous damage from this pest. In
I. northwest Texas and western Oklai
homa severe hail and windstorms
s did local damage. The northern portion
of the belt from Oklahoma to
1 North Carolina and many points in
j the interior have had too much rain.
. Some sections have had too much cool
t weather. Outside of weevil damage
s and a few lice there is little complaint
of insect pests. Stands are
better than usual, but in the Caro0
linas and Georgia there is much ir'
regularity in the size of the plants
because of dry weather in May. A
s small quantity of fertilizers, general6
ly of a low grade, was used this year.
Taking the belt as a whole the cotton
crop will average at least two weeks
late."
