C. * Lawson, who has been the able and efficient pastor of Carters-Ford Baptist church, and other churches in this county for the past five years, has resigned his work in this county to accept a pastorate in Chesterfield county. , It is with deep regret that his many friends and co-workers see him leave Colleton, and all earnestly pray that God's richest blessings may rest upon iiim ana nis ramuy in ineir new home, or wherever they may go, and pray that God's guiding spirit may direct him in his untiring efforts to spread the Gospel. The platform will indorse his administration and the record made by the Democratic congress. Where Republican leaders have been wrong the president and the Democratic congress have been right. The Republican leaders have opposed all that has been done in favor of lower tariff rates, an income tax, currency , reform and anti-trust legislation. They have insisted on war with Mexico and even want to enter the European war. The Germans have made no attempt to debouch from Malancourt I since their occupation of the village. The heavy bombardments of preceding days in tl>3 region northwest of Verdun have greatly slackened and there has been only moderate activity by the big guns to the north and east of the fortress. Paris reports the failure of a German infantry attack against the French to the south of the Somme river near Dompierre, the shelling by the French of German troops on the march in the Argonne forest and the battle ring of German positions in the forest of Apremont. Violent artillery duels have been in progress in the region of Dixmude. There has been a noticeable decrease in the infantry fighting on the Russian front, probably owing to the soggy ground in the spring tha,?. The artillery of both sides, however, has been carrying out bombardments at various points from the region of Riga southward. Bad weather also is hampering the fighting of the Austrians and Italians. A German torpedo boat or subma rine has sunk in tfie Black Sea the Russian hospital ship Portugal, according to the French official press bureau. The vessel is said to have a large number of wounded men aboard. * The American ambassador in Berlin has asked the German government whether a German submarine torpedoed the steamers Sussex, Englishman and Manchester Engineer. President Wilson and his cabinet have again discussed the situation arising from the sinking of the Englishman and Manchester Engineer and the injury to the steamer Sussex, all of which had Americans aboard when the explosions occurred, but the American government will take no determined action in the premises pending the receipt of conclusive IK proof that a submarine or submarines II were responsible. 11 The eastern counties of England have again been visited by Zeppelin airships, which dropped a large num ber of bombs at various points. Today he went to the house to hear speeches on the 80th birthday of "Uncle Joe" Cannon and He lost himself, became bewildered, and gn had to secure a friendly pilot before ^ he got back to his own quarters. jy The exercises were to begin in the house at 11 o'clock, and the story of how the senator got locked in is best told in his own words: "I like Cannon very much, and da respect him,'* said the senator, "and ru I went over there about five minutes after 11. I had hardly got seated before some one brought about a call of the house under some hocus pocus CO I did not understand. Knowing it De would take 40 minutes to call the roll, I got up to leave, and lo and behold I found myself locked in! So ,. dii I determined to make the best of it co and sat down again.
