The election is not to p be considered, though, if we understand the matter, as a protest against good roads, but rather against the ; / manner in wh'ich it was sought to se||f cure permanent improvement. Pit is to be hoped that the county1 convention will put itself on record as being opposed to the county-tocounty campaign every two years. No good comes of this plan of campaigning.* Now, every candidate for a State office is compelled to follow the campaign party, whether he ! I?.:- wants to do so or not. If he departs * f from the custom, he puts himself -> ? completely out of the running. It is a hardship upon the poor man? in fact a poor man cannot afford to Irave political aspirations for a State office?because, to begin with, a P large expenditure is required to make the canvass with the campaign party. Or, r ? if he wants to conduct a county-tocounty campaign, he can arrange his d ownv meetings. Anyway, the cam- Q paign meetings, as now held, only afford food for the cheap politician and demagogue. There is no time for the discussion of issues. A candidate is allowed a few minutes in which to discuss matters which e would require hours. Of course he cannot do it, and so he usually com- c promises the matter by eliminating ^ the issues entirely, tells a few jokes. ^ expresses his delight at being among s such good people, thanks his audi- f ence for the very kind attention ac- ^ corded him, and sits down. Those ^ who start out on the issues have to < , ? , be so brief that they are more often j misunderstood. He was a sufferer from rheumatism svhen, at a friend's advice, he began to carry the potato, which was then i good-sized one.
