. u Gratitude as the Real r Key to Christmas Joy kj I By "BILLY" SUNDAY ! i " - ~ j Jgj?S"-y>rNETEEN hundred years flAlV ago a star poised above a C^jjUL3J lowly manger in BethieX^SStS hem, and above the moonlit hills of Judea the an. gels heralded the beginning of the life of Jesus Christ upon this earth. And once more the birthday of the Saviour approaches. How fast these festal days follow one another! Only a few days ago l was penning a Thanksgiving day message. Now we are looking forward with happy hearts and bright anticit H ipations to Christendom's great giftgiving day. Gratitude inspires in us the grace of giving. Gratitude is the great original source of noble living and service, just as sin is the original source and root of aU selfishness. The great allseeing eye of God, as it surveys this 1 planet, with all its scenes of revelry and Its riot of sin, beholds but one festering ulcer?selfishness?and gazes upon one thing of great beauty?gratitude?which recognizes in every need v- of man the voice of God. The immortal Prances E. Willard said: "I regard ingratitude as one of J 8^* Y the basest of sins." J jp The Psalmist said: - "What shall I I i ? render unto the Lord for all his good- I ness to me?" Then answers his own I P? . Question by saying: "I will take the 1 fe cup of salvation and call upon the fl v name of the Lord." Never before have we so seriously fe faced the question of our obligation to itfj' ' Almighty God. There are thousands of heavy-hearted, world-worried men |^; and women who will never find life, worth living until their lives are linked with Jesus Christ. , Bfe.y, There is no safety save in service. We must use or lose. The Dead sea gives nothing out, and that's why it is Mi dead. Many lives are like the Dead fe; sea. If you would have the joy of gjp ^Christmas, you must find it in doing feJ what Jesus did. He went about doIng good. No one will ever find the Christian secret of a happy life save toy trying to make it easier for others ||j^V to do right and harder to do Wrong, lifers There is joy in lifting any burdens of others, as the little girl found it ; who was carrying her baby brother ttrrckaa thp fitrppt Hft was alm08t SS ibig as she was. M /;] "Isn't he heavy?" asked a passer-by. M p- "Oh, no; he's my brother." 11 h. You cannot be a Christian without I" being a good fellow in the sense of ? trying to tyelp others to be good, or, , as someone has put it, "Except you erect the cross in your own heart, r Jesus will profit you nothing." : O Holy Child of Bethlehem, , ; ^ . Descend on us, we pray; ; Cast out our sin and enter in; 4 j:'^' v Be born in us today. ALL READY FOR HIS WORK ^ K%?- I t v Spirit of Christmas | The core of Christmas is the truth J ot unselfishness. This day ot the t new spirit that irradiates ail the *** earth, is the day of. lavish pouring out of seit. "Somebody cares, is written 1 large over every Christmas J gift and Christmas plan. It is the ih day of taking thought for other per- n< sons.
