PLATINUM A USEFUL METAL.
But it is Two and One-Half Times as
Costly as Gold.
In chemical laboratories the safety
of the equipment of platinum vessels
such as crucibles, dishes, trays
and stirring rods receives constant
attention. Platinum is the costliest
useful metal in the world, having
about two and one-bait times tne
market value of gold. A thousand
dollars' worth of platinum crucibles
could be easily carried in a man's
pocket. Such vessels cost about $50

a troy ounce.
Thefts of platinum from laboratories
are of frequent occurrence.
The thief usually has received laboratory
training and knows the value
of platinum. He visits a laboratory
for pretended professional purposes,
and while discussing scientific questions
with the chemist in charge
manages to secrete such platinum as
comes within his reach and disappears.
Platinum is so precious that both

place upon each article an individual
mark, which is recorded, together
with the actual weight. The latter
is computed to the fourth decimal
which is inclusive of one-tenth of a
milligram.
Losses by theft are promptly reported,
frequently by telegraph, to
manufacturers and dealers in platinum
and scientific publications, the
^ weight, size and form of each article
being carefully described. There are
only four or five reputable dealers
in platinum for laboratory purposes
. in the United States.
The metal is extensively usea,
however, in mounting for jewels, and
in the manufacture of electric light
globes. Its utility for the latter purpS;
pose is due to the fact that the coefficients
of expansion of platinum

and glass are the same.
j The physical virtues of platinum
from the standpoint of the chemist
and assayer constitute the thief's
greatest difficulty in disposing of his
spoils if he is expert, without scientific
knowledge of how to melt or
decompose the metal. Platinum remains
intact in the fierce heat of an
? oxyhydrogen blow-pipe up to 1,700
degrees centigrade, or about 3,200
% V degrees Fahrenheit, while lead melts
at^327, silver 961, gold at 1,071 and
% 1 iron 'at 1,550 degrees centigrade.
Platinum is not solvent in any sin
gle acid, but may be attacked by a
?v:; combination of certain acids, with
^ the result that it becomes brittle.
Strong acids are commonly used in
Jv'.. \ cleaning platinum vessels in the lab(g-J
oratory. Peculiarly, platinum is
easily cleaned by rubbing it with
' round moist sea sand on the end of
one's finger. In appearance platinum
lacks the richness of gold, and
' resembles tin that has become slightly
oxidized.

RELIGION.
A Simple Analysis of the Gospel of
Christ.
I believe it was Bill Xye who said
that he preferred a certain church to
all others because it didn't interfere
with either his politics or his religion.
The remark could be applied to almost
any church of the present day,
for it is a painful but very evident
fact that few church people really
know what they believe, and that all
know, or seem to know, what ChrisHanitv
means.
For that matter, very few people
know, or seem to know, what Christianity
really is.
The average church member reserves
the right to interpret Chrifet's
teachings to please himself, and the
further right to disregard those
teachings that interfere with his business
or his passions.
Yet the religion of Christ is so
simple that a child can understand
it, and the basic principle so clear
that a wayfaring man, though a fool,
need not fail to grasp it.
Christ's life was a life of service;
his gospel was a gospel of love. The
one thing he tried unceasingly to impress
on the minds of those who
would be his followers was that they
must forgive and love one another.
And that one requirement proves a
stumbling block in the paths of most
folks who would be Christians.
No man or woman who can read
can doubt the truth of the statement
that it is impossible for one to hate
and remain a Christian. Yet nearly
all folk who profess to be Christians
allow themselves the privilege of
"holding a grudge" against somebody.
Thus we have a race of pious hypocrites
who will get into heaven, if at
all, far. behind the harlots and
thieves.
The professing Christian who harbors
ill-will must be either very
stubbornly wicked or very, very ignorant.
If I have injured you, or hurt your
feelings, or offended your pride, and
you set about trying to get even, or
so much as hold resentment against
me, and yet claim to be a Christian,
you are either a deliberate liar or
you belong in a home for feeble
minded.
For any man or woman who has
intelligence enough to claim belief in
Christ also has intelligence enough
to know that hate, ill-will, resentment
and "grudges'-' are as far from
Christianity as the east is from the
