Herbert Yarn finds tliE he cannot meet his appointment ac vertised for Ehrhardt for Decembe 26th to January 6th, and asks us t so state. The trains of the Southern Ral way which pass Bamberg have bee running badly behind time recently It fact it is seldom that a train react es here on time. All the boys and girls who hav been away at college are at home fo the Christmas holidays. We are gla to 6ee them. But there are too man ^ of them to attempt to publish thei names. Mr. J. E. Felder, a son of Capl and Mrs. J. D. Felder, of this citj has been elected intendant of th town of Cope, where he is now mak -ing his home. You can't keep Bam berg boy6 down. The stores will close Thursda; for Christmas, the banks will clos< two days, and the post office will ob serve Sunday hours Thursday. Somi of the stores will possibly clos* Thursday and Friday. We are not printing but a four page paper this ?week. In the firs place there is not much news, every body seems intent on "taking Christ mas," and our force has been rush ed out of all reason recently. Then too, we have not a large amount o advertising. Mr. W..M. Brabham was taken t< a hospital in Charleston last week as he was suffering from an attacl of appendicitis. He was operate* on and stood it well. He is doin? nicely, and his many friends will b< glad to know that he will be bacl home before very long. The fire company has tested out al the hose on hand and a lot^ of .nev hose has been ordered, and tfce de partment will be in good shape te take care of fires should there be any during the holidays. But every body should be mighty careful witl tire, especially at this season. Over in Orangeburg those people who are behind the movement t< recall the mayor and one of the coun cilmen of that city are trying t< get Col'W. G. Smith to run for mayoi in the recall election to be heJc soon, even announcing his candidacy in the newspapers there, but he de clined to run. Notwithstanding the \late trains at night, the last mail arriving is al ways distributed at the post office here. This keeps the force on dut\ very late, and is not required by the department, but it is done to ac commodate the public. Recently the night mail has been distributed lone after nine o'clock. On acount of the wreck near Augusts. Monday no mail was received at Bamberg Monday morning. The train finally arrived about one o?cloct in the afternoon, but there was nc mail clerk on it, and no mail was received or sent off on either of the morning trains. Mail was receivec ? and dispatched on the night trains although both were very late, the last mail not arriving until nearlj 11 o'clock. However, the mail was onrl fho pprpral r?plivpr\ window opened, something that has not been done in Bamberg in oui recollection. Bamberg Banking Company. The annual meeting of stockhold ers of the Bamberg Banking Com pany was held last Monday. The re port of the officers showed a satis factory year's business, and a hand some dividend was declared and i substantial amount placed to th< surplus and undivided profits. Th< same directors were elected, as fol lows: J. A. Byrd, J. B. Black, J. D Copeland, W. D. Rhoad. H. F. Bam berg, E. C. Hays, H. J. Brabham These directors re-elected the sam< officers: J. A. Byrd, president; J. B Black, vice president: D* F. Hooton cashier; \V. D. Coleman, assistan cashier. The profits for the year amountec to twenty per cent., and the divident declared was seventeen per cent This bank has a capital of $55,000 with a surplus and undivided profit: of $52,000. A full choir of male and female voices furnished some of the most beautiful it music e*-er hear here o.i similar occasions. Two of the pieces rendered were: "There Were Shepherds." and s " 'Tis Heaven's Reply." At the morns ing hour Rev. T. C. O'Dell, a former g pastor here, but now presiding elder of the Anderson district, preached at the eleven o'clock hour, taking ^ his text from the second chapter of Titus and the fourteenth verse. In the evening Mr. M. W. Brabham. 0 Sunday-school Field secretary of the North Carolina conference, spoke on the subject: "A Diagram of the Hun man Life," which was a discission ' of the development of the child life. Peoples Bank. 0 ' The annual meeting of stockholdr ers of the Peoples Bank will be held on Tuesday, January 6th, at the banking house at four o'clock r p. m. The report of the officers show a most satisfactory year's business, the net earnings being $5,393.95. '? Of this amount an 8 per cent divie dend, $2,000, will be paid out, $2, " 000 added to the surplus fund, and " >1.393.95 standing as undivided profits. Mrs. Farris mailed the 1 letters, he said. Ora warned away prospective bridegrooms and if they became insistent the father threat ened them. The treasurer's office will be open for the collection of State, county, school and all other taxes from the 15th day of Octobei, 1913 until the 15th day of Marcn, iyi4, inclusive. From the first day of January, i 1914, until the 31st day of January, 1914, a penalty of one per cent, will be added to all unpaid taxes. From the 1st day of February, 1914, until the 28th day of February, 1914, a penalty of 2 per cent, will be added i to all unpaid taxes. All persofcs who were 21 years of age on or before the let day of January, 1913 are liable to a poll tax of one dollar, and all who have not made returns to the Auditor, are requested to do so on or before the 1st of January, 1914.
