Has the attorney generals office prosecuted any of the governor's friends so far? We ask to know. Even the most pessimistic man in Bamberg will tell you these days that the town is growing and progressing right along and that its growth has just commenced good. Watch us grow for the next three years! We do not know anything of the nature of the charges on which Rev. S. A. Nettles was tried at conference this week and found guilty, but we imagine they could not have been very grave or he would not have received such light punishment at the hands of the Bishop, i. e., suspension from the ministry for three months. However, we do know that several members of the conference have been opposed to Mr. Nettles as editor of the Advocate " * ? j ,1 lor several years, auu we nuuuci n those who prosecuted the case or rather worked*it up exercised that Christian charity and brotherly love which they preach. We hope they did. ? Bamberg is certainly growing night along. With the improvements going on at the present rate, it will not be many years before we can lay claims to being something of a real city. What we need now is some paved streets and the water mains extended and a sewer system installed. A petition will soon be circulated asking the legislative delegation to have a constitutional amendment passed so we can vote additional bonds in caset he voters decide they want to issue bonds for this purpose. We confidently expect to see a sewer system in Bamberg in two years, and this, with paved streets, will put Bamberg on a real boom. The completion of the railroad to Ehrhardt will also benefit the town in every way. ParAloc llaorl Man Columbia, Nov. 27.?Jack Scruggs, who was serving a life term in the penitentiary from Spartanburg, died at the penitentiary in April of 1912. The penitentiary officials found today that his name was included in the list of paroles sent to the prison yesterday. Married at Summerville. The many friends in this city of Mr. Ben S. Barton will be interested to learn of his marriage which took place yesterday, December 3rd. He was happily married at five o'clock yesterday afternoon in the Methodist church at Summerville to Miss Bertha E. Limehouse. Kev. Mr. Williams was the officiating minister. After a short wedding trip they will reside at Summefville. Mr. Barton's friends in his old home extend congratulations. BRANCHVILLE ELECTION. W. A. Dukes Chosen Mayor Over J. B. Williams, Jr. Branchville, December 2.?In the election for town officers yesterday, W. A. Dukes defeated J. B. Williams, Jr., by a small majority for mayor. The following were elected aldermen: B. F. Smoak, T. L. Hutto, H. D. Steedly, O. W. Smoak, B. X. Minus. J. A. Barr, and P. C. Dukes tied for the sixth place. Dawsey to Brazil conference. After the reading of the appointments conference adjourned. Rev. Nettles Guilty. The closing of the 128th annual session of the South Carolina Methodist conference was held Monday night in St. John's church, before an audience that packed the house. There was an unusual feeling of interest manifested not only because of the appointments that were to be read at the close of the conference, but of the expected report of the trial committee on the charges preferred against Rev. S. A. Nettles. The trial committee had been in secret meeting all day, and even when the conference opened at 7.30 o'clock with Bishop Denny presiding, the committee was not ready to report. Hymns were sung, remarks were made, and Bishop Denny delivered an address, as the time passed on and the committee did not appear. A resolution was presented to the conference that Bishop Wilson be requested not to appoint Rev. S. A. Nettles as editor of The Southern Christian Advocate. This was unanimously carried. Another resolution was presented that Rev. R. E. Stackhouse be reccommended for the editorship of The Southern Christian Advocate and Rev. H. B. Brown to be the assistant editor. Both of the gentlemen refused to have their names mentioned for the position. Rev. Mr. Nettles arose and asked permission to speak. After some objections from members of the conference, he was granted the privilege when a member of the conference made the motion that the conference adjourn for 15 minutes. This was carried and Mr. Nettles did not get the chance to make any explanations regarding the charges brought against him. When the conference was called together after the recess the trial committee was ready to report. The committee found Mr. ! Nettles guilty, but in view of mitigating circumstances, recommended that his sentence be a light one. Bishop Denny then suspended Mr. Nettles for three months from the ministry. U As to his removal as editor of The i Southern Christian Advocate this was I left for the board of managers of The Advocate to decide. As Mr. Nettles has a four-year contract entered into the first of this year, it is doubtful J??J? ?J? J?
