Mr. H. M. Graham has purchased
the residence on Railroad Avenue
known as the Cauthen house, recently
owned by the estate of Mrs. W. W.
Steedley, and later sold to Mr. Smith,
from whom Mr. Graham purchased.
He and family will move into it in a
few days.
Our patrons are urged to let us
have their changes of ads. early. It
is impossible to change ads, for everybody
when they all come in late, as
is usual with our advertisers. We
must insist that copy for changes be
in our hands not later than Monday
night, or the ads. connot be changed
for that week's issue.
Mr. J. W. Price, of this city, has
rented the Simms plantation, below
Midway, and will operate it next
year. Mr. A. J. Hunter has been
renting this place for a number of
years, and now that he is forced to
leave it, he is offering all his farm
machinery, corn fodder, etc., for sale.

Bamberg needs another building *
and loan association and needs it
bad. Another such institution could ?

be easily organized here, and we
hope somebody will go to work and
solicit subscriptions to the capital
stock. A number of houses would be
built here if there was an association
in existence where the parties could t
obtain money to build with. Let's c

Mrs. Jones Williams will entertain y
to-morrow (Friday) afternoon at
four o'clock with a linen shower, <
complimentary to Miss Inez Lemacks,
of Beaufort, who is visiting here, and
who will become the bride of Mr. L.

Williams is well-known as a gracious t
hostess, whose affairs are always in j
exquisite taste, and a most delightful l
occasion is looked forward to by

Special Term of Court.
A petition has been prepared by
the local bar and forwarded to the
governor, asking for a special terra
of court here, beginning the first
Monday in November. Chas. Carroll
Simms, Esq., of Barnwell, has been
named in the petition as presiding
judge. The regular term of court is
to convene here on the second Monday
in November, and this special
term is asked for to clear up all the
criminal cases and other matters in
order to give time for two weeks in
the trial of civil cases and the clearing
of the calendar, as many cases are
now awaiting trial. It is thought
the petition will be granted and the
special term held.
New Teacher.
Miss Leona Thomasson, who
taught in the high school department
of the Bamberg graded school last
year, resigned her position some ]
weeks ago in order to go to Chins, 1
where she will teach the children of i
the missionaries. She came down at ]
the onenine of the school last week 1
and taught until her place could be
filled. She left for her home last
Friday afternoon. Miss Berta Newton,
of Bennettsville, has been elected
to fill the vacancy, and she arrived
in Bamberg Monday afternoon. Miss
Newton is a graduate of Converse
College, and has been teaching for
several years.

although the fire department turned
put in a short time, it was impossible
:o save the building, it being a large
Tame structure, but the fire was kept
from spreading to other buildings.

business portion of the town, for had
:here been no water there is no telling
where the fire would have stopped,
as the store of the F. W. Free
2o. was already on fire in the rear
when the water was turned on and
:he store of G. A. Ducker was almost 1
ready to burst into flames. The Free
store is situated North of the stables 1
md the Ducker store on the South
side. (
The fire originated in a small house
aext to the stables in which a lot of
;eed cotton was stored, and the flames
spread rapidly. As soon as the alarm
was given Messrs. H. W. Herndon
md H. Li. Hinnant, who were first on
:he scene, broke open the stables and ^
iberated the horses and mules, so no ,
ive stock was destroyed. A few sec- t
pnd-hand wagons were saved, these r
peing in the lot, but a number of new r
puggies and wagons, a lot of harness, j
ptc., was destroyed in the burned }
milding..
Just before the water was turned t
m the fire looked serious, as Mr.
tree's store was already on fire in c
he rear, Mr. Ducker's almost ready
o catch, and as other stores on Main ^
street are right up against these, the ^
ire might have been a most serious ^
)ne.
The barn of Dr. J. B. Black was
tlso destroyed, and Dr. Robert Black c
tlso lost a lot of lumber which was ^
stored in a house near these build- j
ngs. A number of stalls belonging (
o Mr. E. C. Hays were also burned,
md while the meat house of Mr. W. j
D. Rhoad caught on fire, it was put
>ut, but was damaged considerably. e
The wooden pump house at the oil J
anks was also destroyed.
Black & Black had insurance on
he buildings and contents amounting t
o $2,500, and their loss is no doubt ^
>5,000. A lot of fodder and other
eed in the loft of the stables was
ost. In fact practically nothing was i
saved from the buildings except the j
lorses and mules. They are hauling c
umber now and will rebuild at once. .

Dinner Party.
Another pretty compliment for
Mrs. All's charming visitors, Mrs. '
Walker and Mrs. Lewis, was the
iinner party given by Miss Marie
Williams at the Gildare Hotel on
Friday evening. Covers were laid
or eight, and a course dinner was

Mrs. Florence Godbee and her hus- s
)and. W. S. Godbee, a prominent resi- <v
lent of this place, were shot to death
iy the convicted woman on August
IS. The killing occurred at the Milen
postoffice. Mrs. Godbee was immediately
arrested and on Sept. 9 .vas
indicted for the two murders. \
Her trial for killing Mrs. Godbee j
tvas called Thursday. Only a small
lumber of witnesses were examined, (
:heir testimony dealing with details
if the crime. The accused woman (
:ook the stand and told of alleged
mistreatment by W. S. Godbee. (
Two minutes after the jury re:urned
its verdict Judge Hammond (
sentenced Mrs. Godbee to remain in
the penitentiary the "rest of her \
natural life." She stood while sen- j
tence was pronounced. Her daughter, i
Sarah, broke down and wept audibly, <
out she was as calm and stoic as she ,
had been through the trial. ,
The case has excited the keenest
interest throughout the State. Mrs. j
Jodbee claimed as a defense that she ]
had long been mistreated by her hus- }

for a new trial at once, and if this is
ienied to appeal the case to the Supreme
