Ag0Aiken, May 22.?Advices received here late this afternoon state that Mr. Matt Clark and seven children, of White Pond, are suffering from ptomaine poisoning, caused by eating canned goods. Two physicians have been in conI * v stant attendance, but despite this fact, one child is already dead, and three others are not expected to live. For Mr. Clark and the remaining children the physicians still hold out some hope. The afflictions visited upon this family during the past six days are most tragic and unusual. Just about week ago, the father and ten of his children were bitten by a dog who had the rabbies. The entire party was carried to Columbia for treatment and had just returned home, when this second blow - fell upon them. The wife and mother is beside herself with grief. v :* < NOT TO PRESS FIGHT. Prohibitionists of Florence May Not l- Wage Campaign Now. Florence, May 24.?It is understood from some of the prohibitionists in the community that on account - JTi* . of the financial condition of the city, deeply in debt, and the prospect for a very heavy tax levy to meet the expenses in case the dispensary were closed, the matter of an election for its removal will not be pressed very - greatly at this time. It is thought by some that the forcing of the fight at > this time would cost the prohibition* , ists many votes from those who fear the result. It is also said that the fight may be switched from one on local option to one for Statewide prohibition with a law to prevent the importation of liquor as contemplated in the Webb 4 law. The city of Florence is in debt very heavily because of the indisposition of the former councils to put on * enough tax levy to meet the expenses, a desire to make a showing for a i government with small tax levy and the result is that the tax levy for ^ Florence raises only $14,000, and the expenses of the city are nearly $100,a vp.ar. ? - V ? _____ VICTIM OF PECULIAR ACCIDENT. W. P. Roof, Jr., Suffers Painful Injury at Lexington. Lexington, May 26.?W. P. Roof. Jr., met with a most peculiar as well as painful accident yesterday. He was standing at the corner of the Lexington depot, when an extra engine came along, and without a moment's warning, Mr. Roof was struck on the left temple with a piece of iron. For several seconds it was hard for those around to realize what had happened. It seems that a gasoline engine was sitting near the track, ready to be expressed on the northbound train, and this was struck by the engine passing by. The fly wheel to the gasoline > engine was torn to shivers and it was ; a piece of the flying iron that struck Mr. Roof on the head. Mr. Roof was standing more than fifty feet from the engine that was struck, it is said. , The young man was hurried to Lexington, where his injuries were given immediate attention by Dr. E. P. Derrick, and Mr. Roof is resting quite well today. / CURSED YOUNG LADY. I Julian Warren Arrested and Lodged in Saluda Jail. Saluda, May 22.?Julian Warren, white, was lodged in jail here Tuesday afternoon by the rural policemen charged with cursing a young lady of the McXary Ferry vicinity on Monday. He managed to elude the policemen until Tuesday morning, I when it was learned that he was in Batesburg, where he was arrested and brought to Saluda. When the news of his alleged con-j duct toward the young lady was first learned there was more or less excitement in the community. 0 HIS NECK BROKEN IN FIGHT. According to the evidence, Pric more, Gordon and others were at t home of Ben Smith about midnigl Pridemore tried to induce a you woman to sit down beside him. Pric more staggered and fell down, a; Gordon, accusing him of being druc grabbed him by the collar, slapp him, and put him out of the hous Pridemore started to run and Gord pursued him down the road. Wh the others arrived Gordon was lyi: in the road, twitching convulsive! Pridemore, according to witness* was standing over him with a sti in his hands. Heavy Timber Driven Through Bex Elberton, Ga., May 21.?Char McCranie, a young white man, had piece of timber driven through 1 stomach Friday at Phillips Mill, w< of Adel, Ga., and is yet alive and cc scious. Kansas City, May 22.?A mob j 500 negroes surrounded the Flc J Avenue police station in the neg quarters of Kansas City today, ho\ ing for the death of Wesley Robi son, one of their race who last nig confessed, the police say, to slayi his wife and daughter with a hatct last Saturday night.
