Hunter's Chapel, School House, Every Wednesday. Ehrhardt, Dr. Roberts' Office, Every Thursday. Denmark, Dr. Matthews' Office, Every Friday. Bamberg, Court House, Every Sat urday. This disease is caused by a small worm which lives in the small intestine or bowel. The worm when full grown is about a half inch in length, and as big around as a pin. It is of a dirty, white color. Cut No. 1 shows the worm as it appears to the eye. Cut No. 2 shows the worm greatly mag- j nified; as it appears under the micro- i scope. These worms lay eggs. These j eggs are too small to be seen by the; naked eye. Under the microscope j they look like this .(see cut No. 4.) Each female worm may lay over a; thousand eggs in a day. They do j not hatch in the bowel. These eggs j pass out with the bowel movement I #gp?| : IpfeliSliil i Cut No. 1.?Showing the Worm as It Appears to the Naked Eye.. and get on the ground. Here, in a j week or two, one worm hatches out i of each egg.. In hot weather the i worm may hatch out in one day. i These young hookworms are called embryos. These little worms live in the dirt and grow for two or three days more. They get ready to case their skin again and in this stage they are called encysted embryos, j Under the microscope they appear to be in a capsule. They are too | small to be seen by the naked eye.! They cannot be seen j but they are there nevertheless. They ! can be felt. Let any barefooted person walk on soil which is polluted; j that is, contains body discharges and in a few moments there is a stinging sensation on the feet. Later; this gets worse and in a few hours; time the skin between the toes and % on top of the foot is red and swollen. The itching is intense and the desire to scratch is irresistable. If these discharges do not pers 1 evpn get on the ground, there will be no 1 ground itch and no hook worm disease. For this reason we never have hookworm in cities where sewer sys- *s terns are used, or in country districts mg * hoc T] where sanitary privies are used. not o bet us return to the little hookworm too small to be seen by the naked eye which had burrowed through the skin and caused ground T*1 itch. It is easy to see count then how these little w/arms may be coughed up from the windpipe and ?f thi swallowed. These pass through the As stomach to the first portion of the estim small bowel. Sometimes they are hook1 found in all parts of the bowel. It d< takes the worms two months or more more to travel from the skin to the bowel. La: They cause no disease while taking child] the journey. As soon as they reach exam the bowel, they attach themselves by them means of two pairs of lips to the Past 1 lining of the bowel or mucous mem- thous brane (see cut No. 4) and soon be- ease come full grown?that is, about a ties * half inch long. (See cut No. 1.) Each worm has a small tooth, which is hoi- Th' low like the needle of a hypodermic Th< syringe. The worm takes hold of the a the bowel lining. Hov Th These worms shortly after entering bowel (see cut No. 4) begin laying great eggs (see cut No. 3) just as their parents did. These eggs do not hatch e the body, but are expelled the bowel movement and hatch of the soil. ie worm will live in the bowel eight or ten years unless the nt is treated. Every worm in ?owel has gone through the skin, j y time we have ground itch a litolony of hookworms has started 1 :he bowel.
